Lab #17 – Earthquakes and Plate Boundaries Date:

Introduction
The theory of plate tectonics attempts to explain changes in the earth's crust and its surface. Plate tectonics
describes the motion of these crustal plates as they "float" upon the denser semi-liquid mantle. Per this theory,
the earth's crust is broken up into 12 large plates, which fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. This lab focuses on
what occurs between the crustal plates during the plate's motion.

Part 1 – Earthquake Activity and Plate Tectonics
a) In as small print as possible, plot the attached earthquake data and label each point with the earthquakes
magnitude. Use a red dot and font for earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 5.0
b) Using the maps provided, sketch in the tectonic plates. Use three different colors to represent
convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries (be sure to place a key in the margin to the right of the
map.
c) Answer the following summary questions.

1) What relationship exist, (if any), between earthquakes and the boundary between two tectonic plates?

2) Is there any relationship between the magnitude of earthquakes (greater than 5.0) and the type of plate
boundary at which it occurred?

3) What impact does the movement of tectonic plates have on the formation, altering, and destruction of
rocks?
