BOAT REVIEW CRUISING BORA BORA WITH ACHILLES III
Bora Bora is an internationally renowned location
for cruising, diving and for the more romantically
inclined, honeymooning. Captain Ces Casey took
Achilles III to Bora Bora in May 2007 for five
months and shares his knowledge, wisdom and
inside secrets of cruising this incredible location.

Departing from the Gold Coast on 2 May
2007, Achilles III took 17 days to reach
Bora Bora factoring in an overnight stay at
Fiji and a couple of days in Pago Pago. The
total voyage was 3,385 nautical miles. Once
reaching Bora Bora, Achilles III spent a lot of
time anchored in the lagoon on the east side
of Motu Toopua. It is a secluded anchorage as
the channel into the lagoon was studded with
bommie’s which seemed to keep the yachts out.

For those keen on snorkelling or diving (and
let’s face it, who wouldn’t be if you were in Bora
Bora), Ces recommends this location as the best
spot. “It is high tide everyday at midday so the
light is right and it has phenomenal 40 metre
plus visibility. For the more daring, the shark
dive outside the lagoon is a must,” said Captain
Casey.
For some land-based activities, Ces recommends
the Hotel Bora Bora for dining as the meals and
view are exquisite. Most of the resorts welcome
non-guests and The St Regis is an iconic Bora
Bora resort with five star bars and restaurants.
For a local, more casual ‘yachtie’ bar, Bloody
Mary’s does not disappoint with a combination
of yachties, locals and celebrities.
It wouldn’t be a trip to Bora Bora without some
Black Pearl shopping. Generally, Black Pearls can
be found everywhere, however Ces recommends
The Pearl Farm at Raititi Point. Lastly, Captain
Casey advises anyone going to French Polynesia
to learn conversational French and to use a yacht
agent like Tahiti Ocean as it will make the cruise
all the more enjoyable and hassle-free.

BUSINESS REVIEW East Coast Marine Electrical
East Coast Marine Electrical (ECME) is not afraid
of a challenge. Indeed, they seem to relish
complex marine electrical projects. Since 1996,
owners Mel and Dave Wilbraham have strived
to continually find ways to enhance their
services and team. It has often meant taking on

Dave and Mel came to Australia from South

One of their first clients was Leigh-Smith Cruiser

Leigh-Smiths and took premises at Gold Coast
City Marina and Shipyard (GCCM).
From this base, ECME has grown from a single

HAMPTON MOTOR YACHTS
MORE THAN A PRETTY FACE
The Hampton 680 has arrived for the first time in Australia. It is her debut at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, however there
is more to Hampton Yachts than the impressive 68-foot pilothouse cruiser.

The Hampton Yacht Range’s design and construction philosophy for all of its yachts is the embodiment of continual improvement and
development. The company collects professionals in naval architect, interior designers, boat builders and master craftsmen to create yachts
capable of long sea journeys without compromising on appointments and comfort.

Their yachts range from 56 feet to 90 feet, from sedans to pilothouse yachts and from yachts for the fisherman to the coastal cruiser.

ROWDY’S 40TH BIRTHDAY

Rod Twitchin, a.k.a. Rowdy, celebrated
his big 40th birthday on the Australia Day
weekend at Waterlife Restaurant. The larger
than life personality is a popular figure at
GCCM and for years his pranks and larrikin
ways are a quality most of us are used to.
It seemed only fitting his 50 closest friends
should gather on Australia Day decked in
green and gold to celebrate Rowdy, reminisce
and look forward to future years of fun!

Happy Birthday, Rowdy!

COMING SOON FROM HAMPTON YACHTS.

I t d i th E d R
Introducing the Endurance Range
Arriving in early 2008 and well worth the wait. The Endurance 700 Sunlounge and the
650 Classic Motor Yachts mark a significant departure in design for Hampton Yachts. And
like all Hampton Yachts, the Endurance is built for safety and performance, with luxurious
amenities and incredible craftsmanship included as standard equipment. Designed in
collaboration with renowned naval architect Howard Apollonio with hydrodynamicist Ed
Hageman, the Endurance Range was extensively tank-tested to assure comfortable and
dependable cruising. Their hybrid hull combines the best characteristics of a split-chine
semi-displacement hull and a planing hull to obtain efficiency (and great fuel economy) for
both cruising at 10 - 12 knots and out running bad weather at 16 - 18 knots. To attend
their debut, keep your eye on future debut announcements. It’ll be well worth the wait!
