Research Projects Completed 1. 1998 – Sleep disorders in Parkinson’s disease: This project evaluated the incidence and prevalence of sleep disorders in patients with Parkinson’s disease along with age matched controls. A proforma based standardized questionarre based study was performed on all subjects. This included an Epworth’s sleepiness scale modified to suit Indian scenario. Depression was evaluated using the ICD10 criteria and Hamilton depression scale. The results of this project has been published in the Movement disorder journal and has been quoted by the following: 1. Treatment of nocturnal disturbances and excessive daytime sleepiness in Parkinson’s disease: P Barone, M Amboni, C Vitale and V Bonavita. Neurology Vol 63 (8) (Suppl No 3), S2 2. 2003 - Co-investigator, Multi centric Clinical Trial of MBC in Diabetic neuropathy, 30 patients recruited in two arms of the trial which involved electrophysiological evaluation, quantitative testing (vibration) in addition to proforma based evaluation. The trial was terminated after one year in view of lack of significant improvement in the diabetic neuropathy status. 3. 2004 – Hospital based survey of knowledge, attitude of people to sleep related disorders. 100 subjects visiting the hospital were subjected through a proforma based 5 point questionnaire relating to sleep problems. Presented at 1 st WASM Berlin. Ongoing Research Support 1. Evolution and progression of restless legs syndrome in patients with renal failure. This project aims at evaluating the evolution of RLS in patients with renal failure depending on the staging of renal disease . There would be an age matched control population as well. Both groups would be evaluated as per the RLS research criteria and WHO classification for renal failure. All patients would be subjected to base line ferritin levels along with other hematological and renal parameters. Proposed large Scale Research Projects 1. Neuro Epidemiology: Prevalence and incidence of neurological and sleep related disorders in urban and rural population, a community based study. A joint study with department of community medicine and public health, SRM medical college Hospital and Research Centre.
