Activity of nitrifying bacteria was measured from April to July 1999 in brackish water ponds,
from three locations on Bengkalis Island, Riau Province, Indonesia. Six isolates of ammonium
oxidizer and 4 isolates of nitrote oxidizer and nitrite oxidizer varies from 1,412 to 5,412
µmole/liter/day, and 0.75-1.083 µmole/liter/day, respectively. Presence of the nitrifying bacteria
reduces the ammonia concentration (toxicity) in brackish water ponds. In contrast, the absence
of those organisms for 31 days would be toxoc and kill the shrimp culture.
Keywords: Nitrifying bacteria, brackish water ponds, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate.
