Organization Information
To qualify for an organization decal you must meet the following requirements: Is your organization a nonprofit corporation or group of nonprofit corporations? Is your common purpose on file with the Secretary of State’s office? Does your organization have at least 200 members? ____Yes ____Yes ____Yes ____No ____No ____No
A qualifying organization or group of organizations shall also meet the following requirements: 1) 2) 3) The primary activity is to serve the community, contribute to the welfare of others and is not offensive or discriminatory. The name and purpose of the organization does not promote any specific product or brand name that is provided for sale. In addition to the completed application, the organization or group of organizations must provide the following: 1) 2) 3) 4) A copy of its articles of incorporation for each organization; A copy of its charter or by-laws for each organization; Any Internal Revenue Service ruling of each organizations’ nonprofit tax exemption status; A completed decal design (a black and white copy and a camera ready color copy) with the organization logo and name, or in the case of a group of organizations, a decal that clearly depicts the common purpose or theme of the group. The decal can be no larger than three inches by three inches.
I certify, for or as the applicant, that the above information is true and correct to the best of my knowledge and belief. I understand the conditions under which the organization decal applied for is issued by the South Dakota Department of Revenue. I further certify that the decal design that is being submitted does not violate copyright law or that if the design is copyright protected that proper authorization has been obtained for the use of the design. Any claims that may result from the production of this decal shall be the responsibility of the applicant or organization requesting the decal and not the Department of Revenue. Upon approval of an application for the organization decal and approval of the design of the decal, the department shall furnish the decals to the organization. The organization shall purchase a minimum of one hundred sets of decals. The organization shall reimburse the department for the cost of the decals, plus a fifteen percent administrative fee. The organization is responsible for determining who qualifies for the decal and the fee to be charged. The organization is also responsible for administration and issuance of the decals.

Organization License Plates and Organization Decals
The South Dakota Department of RevenueDivision of Motor Vehicles began offering organization license plates for non-profit organizations in January of 2000. The organization plates with organization decals are great for nonprofit groups who want to recognize their members, or want a unique fund-raiser. Here is how the program works: Non-profit organizations must fill out an application with the Division of Motor Vehicles and must meet certain requirements (see application for details) to obtain decals. The application can be obtained at all county treasurers’ offices. If you are a member of a nonprofit organization that has been approved for an organization decal, you may obtain an organization license plate from your county treasurer that will allow for the placement of an organization decal on the plate. The organization is responsible for determining who qualifies for the decal and the fee to be charged. The organization is also responsible for the administration and issuance of the decals. Decals other than those authorized and issued by the department are not permitted on license plates. Misuse of decals or unauthorized decals are a Class 2 misdemeanor. If the organization plates are requested at the time of initial application for title and registration of the vehicle at your county treasurer’s office, no additional fees are charged. If organization plates are requested later, the owner shall surrender the current plates and pay a ten dollar fee, to their county treasurer, for the organization plates. Upon sale or transfer of a vehicle bearing organization plates that display an organization decal, the plates shall remain with the owner and may be transferred to another vehicle, upon approval by the department. The purchaser of organization plates may at the time of purchase of the plates purchase a fifteen-day ($15) temporary permit. The owner must purchase a permit before sale of the vehicle to an individual. The temporary permit, obtained from your county treasurer, may only be used upon the sale or transfer of the vehicle to another person.
