TREATMENT – DRAFT #2

                                                                  1
AWAKENINGS – TREATMENT: DRAFT EPISODE 101

1. BLACK. JUST BLACK.

In the darkness – a hum. Mechanical. Unnatural. Louder and
louder the sound becomes, revealing a rhythm, almost like a
heartbeat. A vague blurred light comes into focus, beating in
sync with the hum. As we come more into focus we realise the
light is revolving AROUND us.

Then, the REVERSE ANGLE: EXTREME CLOSEUP. A young woman is
inside what we figure now is some kind of MRI tunnel.

2. INTERIOR MEDICAL ROOM DAY:

The pale young woman slides out of an MRI tunnel. Meet CONNIE
25, brunette, average. Could be anyone‘s sister or friend. She
climbs off the table and straightens herself up. She doesn‘t
want to be here. Connie walks over to the corner and changes
out of her robe. She looks up to anyone who might be
listening:

                Isn’t once a week a little excessive?

The doctor (who we never see) advises through the P.A. system
that it‘s for her own good. She‘s heard it all before.

3. INT. WORKPLACE CAFETERIA DAY:

Connie lines up at the barista stand in her workplace
cafeteria; but this is not like any cafeteria you‘ve seen
before. Think GOOGLE, but on steroids.

Massive glass windows fill the room with natural light. The
open plan layout lets us see across the room. People are
smiling, chatting, going about their day. There‘s colour
everywhere. The food looks fantastic. This place is fantastic.

There are no uniforms, but everyone carries a serious looking
security tag. This is not just corporate America. Whatever
these guys do, they are at the top of their field.

4. INT. WORKPLACE CAFETERIA CONT.:

Connie sits down with her group of friends. They‘re excited.
First the first time in a long time they‘re able to leave the
compound. A weekend of drunken debauchery in Las Vegas is just
a few short hours away.

                                                             2
AWAKENINGS – TREATMENT: DRAFT EPISODE 101

5. INT. WORKPLACE CAFETERIA CONT.:

On the other side of the room two older, unassuming men line
up for food. They move along the line saying yes and no to the
selections offered to them, disinterested.

                                      MAN1

                            Word is you’re close

                                      MAN2

Perhaps. There are more tests to be done. We won’t know for
                       another six weeks.

                                      MAN 1

                             But if he’s right?

                                      MAN 2

Then he’ll decide what to do. And that’ll be his decision. Not
                             mine.

                                (phone beeps)

                                I have to go.

He swipes his security card and exits. The door closes behind
him with a solid ―click‖.

6. INT. WORKPLACE CAFETERIA CONT.:

Suddenly the massive glass windows IMPLODE, shattering across
the crowd. An explosion tears the building apart. SHARDS OF
RAZOR SHARP GLASS RIP THROUGH PEOPLE RIGHT IN FRONT OF OUR
EYES. People are SCREAMING. People are DYING. This is real.
More explosions and the camera looks through the flames to
reveal the inferno outside. WHAT COULD HAVE DONE THIS? WHO
COULD HAVE DONE THIS? Smoke and fire are about to consume us -
-

7. INTERIOR CITY APARTMENT DAY:

EXTREME CLOSE UP: JANE ADDAMS, 27, fires forth into shot,
gasping for air. For a moment we think she‘s inside the
devastation we‘ve just experienced before the camera angle
widens to reveal - - - it was just a dream.

                                                                3
AWAKENINGS – TREATMENT: DRAFT EPISODE 101

We‘re in Jane‘s apartment now, the clock on the bedside table
shows 5.58am. From behind her we see SAM MEDDINGS, 29,
handsome and shirtless. He puts his hand on Jane‘s arm. She‘s
scared. Terrified. It was as real for her as it was for us.
Jane‘s beautiful; blonde with striking blue eyes, wearing just
a pink satin slip. Breathing heavily, she gathers herself,
wiping a solitary tear from her cheek. Sam consoles her; this
isn‘t the first time. They begin to make love as we look down
at her alarm clock. It ticks over to 6:00am and the bell
starts to ring....

8. INTERIOR SUBURBAN HOUSE DAY:

We zoom out on a similar clock going off in another part of
town. A strong hand fumbles down on it. The angle widens and
we meet KEVIN JOHNSON, 33, a muscular African-American man.
Kevin sits on the edge of his bed and puts his head in his
hands. He looks dishevelled, tired, like he hasn‘t slept in
days. Then a wave of resolve washes over his face. This is
going to be HIS day.

9. INTERIOR SUBURBAN HOUSE CONT.:

Kevin is getting his two little girls, LETICIA (8) and CHLOE
(6), ready for school. Or perhaps they‘re getting him ready.
TV is on the news in the background. They‘re making
breakfast. Leticia spreads peanut butter on toast for Chloe
while Kevin packs their lunches. They chat about what the
girls are going to do at school today; Leticia‘s class is
going to the museum. Kevin jokes about their principal being a
fossil. The girls smile as he hands them their lunch boxes.
He‘s a GOOD FATHER. We see now he is in a smart fire fighters
uniform.

                                      KEVIN

Now grab your bags it’s time to go. We can’t be late. Today’s
a very important day for your father.

The girls take their lunches and run to put them in their bags
as Kevin clears the breakfast table. Leticia and Chloe grab
their bags and start to run towards the door.

                                      KEVIN
                                                                 4
AWAKENINGS – TREATMENT: DRAFT EPISODE 101

                WAIT! Haven’t you forgotten something?

The girls run back and give their father a hug as he crouches
down to them.

                                      KEVIN

                                 Ok let’s go!

He grabs his keys from a hook on the wall. There are three
hooks – the middle one is empty. The girls open the door and
step out.

As Kevin is about to close the door he pauses, taking a moment
to glance back at the empty hallway behind him, as if he‘s
WAITING FOR SOMETHING. Then SLAM – door closes.

10. EXTERIOR JANES APARTMENT DAY:

Door closes. Jane turns and looks up the road to her left.
It‘s a bustling city morning.

She turns right to walk and BAM – she is alomost run over by a
Hobo with his shopping cart!!! Meet MALCOLM, 44, peering out
from underneath a disgusting knitted beanie with eyes that
will burn right through you.

Malcolm has been on the streets for years. His whole life is
in this trolley. He is wearing mismatched runners, and an old
trench coat. His matted grey hair and beard have almost grown
together and he REALLY needs a dentist. His bright orange T-
shirt reads CHOOSE LIFE.

Jane is startled. She looks at him oddly, almost as though for
just a moment she recognises this man she‘s never seen before.
Suddenly Malcolm reaches out grabs Jane‘s arm. He looks at her
intently –

                                    MALCOLM

                    “They’re here. It’s happening”

She is disgusted and pushes him off.

                                      JANE

                              Get away from me.

                                                              5
AWAKENINGS – TREATMENT: DRAFT EPISODE 101

She pushes him away and walks in the opposite direction.
Walking towards us now we see Jane with Malcolm behind her,
just STARING.

                                      JANE

                      Freak show (under her breath)

BEAT.

                                    MALCOLM

“I know who you are, Jane”

She stops dead.

REVERSE CAMERA ANGLE as we are now looking at her from
Malcolm‘s perspective. She‘s looking back at us when WHOOOSH -
a bus pulls up behind her. It has JANES FACE ALL DOWN THE SIDE
OF IT - KTV WEEKNIGHTS at 6:00pm. Jane‘s the weathergirl.
Everyone knows her.

11. EXTERIOR PRIMARY SCHOOL DAY:

A school bus pulls away in front of us to reveal the local
elementary school. Kids are running inside as the bell rings.

12. INTERIOR PRIMARY SCHOOL HALLWAY DAY:

Kevin is dropping his youngest, Chloe, off at her home class.
Standing at the door to her class room we meet Chloe‘s teacher
SHANAE COOPER, 32, attractive, elegant. Kevin reaches down and
hugs Chloe goodbye.

                                      KEVIN

          You be good for Miss . . . . . . Cooper, Chloe.

(He trails off as Chloe runs in to see her friends, clearly
                 not paying him much attention)

Shenae expresses to Kevin how Chloe is such a bright and happy
child. He seems surprised to hear this and, now uncomfortable,
excuses himself as the bell rings again.

13. EXT. FIREHOUSE DAY:

The firehouse bell rings and a fire truck drives out, sirens
blaring.
                                                                6
AWAKENINGS – TREATMENT: DRAFT EPISODE 101

14. INT. KEVINS CAR DAY:

The same truck is now driving towards us on the opposite side
of the road. Kevin looks back for a second as it passes; he
ought to be on it. He drives on and we see the truck fade in
the rear view. He needs to it leave behind.

15. INT. HIGHWAY - MONTAGE – DAY:

Kevin and his battered brown mini-van roll past rugged
mountains, desert plains and scattered suburbs before finally
a sign: Welcome to Phoenix.

16. EXT. PHOENIX FIRE DEPARTMENT TRAINING ACADEMY – DAY:

Kevin walks through its sculpted columns, soaking up the
atmosphere and straightening his tie. He comes to a door, FIRE
ACADEMY CHIEF. He takes a deep breath, steadies his gaze, and
enters.

17. INT. FIRE ACADEMY CHIEF'S OFFICE – DAY:

The Academy Chief sits at his desk going over a file. Its
contents include a picture of Kevin receiving a medal for
bravery and underneath – a psychological assessment which we
don‘t have time to read. Out the window can be heard a fire
training class in action.

The two discuss Kevin‘s application to join the Academy as an
instructor. Kevin is desperate for this job. He fears every
day that the call they get might be his last, orphaning his
daughters.

The Chief explains to Kevin that his application was not
successful. The discussion becomes heated and Kevin fights the
decision. The Chief tries to placate Kevin, explaining that
the decision wasn‘t his to make, though he wanted to see for
himself.

Kevin is devastated. He leaves without saying another word.

18. INT. COFFEE SHOP DAY:

Nic Saunders, 23, clean cut young professional, is on the
daily coffee run. He‘s hands are full, carrying twice what any
                                                              7

sane person would even attempt. But he‘s accomplished. He‘s
done this once or twice before. As he exits he nearly bowls
over a man entering the shop. The man accepts Nick‘s apology
graciously enough, but there is something eerily sinister
about this man. Something frightening.

19. INTERIOR TV STATION DAY:

Nick is handing out the last of the coffees. Jane moves
through the office and exchanges pleasantries with her
colleagues as she goes about her day. In the hall she passes
JOANNE PIERCE (32, mixed race, the stations gun reporter) and
confirms plans to meet downtown later for drinks.

Jane arrives in her office to see a massive bouquet of orchids
and lilies standing tall on her desk. The card reads ―Missing
you already, Sam‖. She buries her nose in the livery and takes
a deep breath before slinking back in her chair. You couldn‘t
wipe the smile off her face if you tried.

20. INTERIOR UNIVERSITY LECTURE THEATRE (LECTURER SPEAKING)
DAY:

“Negative emphasis results in an intensified structure and a
stronger ego. Even though some of these activities, like self-
denial, are carried on under the banner of spiritual search,
the result is the same. On a subtle level we know that most
spiritual endeavours will not succeed, but we go on
maintaining the fantasy that they are admirable. Many of us
have no intention of really succeeding in dissolving our
attachment to structure and going to another plane of
existence.”

A smart ass student asks a clever but deliberately
argumentative question. The lecturer, DAVID SYKES, 37, puts
him in his place with charm and wit. OLIVIA is impressed.

The students include NATHAN GORSKI (19, CAUCASIAN, WITTY,
INNOCENT, LIKEABLE) and OLIVIA MELAS (20, HISPANIC, A WOMAN
AMONGST GIRLS). Class is dismissed and they exit the lecture
theatre, protesting amongst themselves the boring assignment
they‘ve just been given.

AWAKENINGS – TREATMENT: DRAFT EPISODE 101

21. UNIVERSITY OUTSIDE DAY:

Olivia flirts with some random jock as he walks past. After a
30 second conversation she gives him her number. When the jock
leaves, Nathan asks why she does ‗that‘, to which she retorts
that the jock will ―be down $100 bucks before he even realises
it‘s a chat line‖

He slinks back with a wry smile and you can tell he has a
crush on her. Hell, we do too. Nathan then moves to the topic
of Olivia‘s secret liaison and before he can utter another
word she shuts him down, threatening eternal embarrassment for
him if he breathes a word to anyone.

22. INTERIOR SHADY MOTEL DAY:

AN OLD STYLE DIGITAL CLOCK FLIPS OVER TO 1:43PM. A
stereotypical rock star wakes up with a girl on each side of
him in a trashed motel in the middle of the desert. His band
mates are in the room next door. The room is trashed. It was a
wild night.

Meet JETHRO DANIELS, J.D., lead singer for the band A
Plastered Voyeur. J.D. gets up, takes a half empty bottle of
tequila in one hand and his guitar in another and slumps down
in the couch across the room as the afternoon sun battles to
find a way through the loosely drawn blinds. As J.D strums
away on his guitar a young girl stumbles in from the next
room. She‘s barely 18 if she‘s lucky.

The young girl steps over J.D. and grabs a bottle off the
table. He reaches out and grabs her hand and stops her;

                                        J.D.

You know you shouldn’t be doing that, not when you’re
pregnant.

She‘s stunned. She‘s told NO ONE.

Shaken, the young girl grabs her clothes and leaves. As she
leaves she brushes past the bands manager TONY SICLUNA who‘s
here to get the band up and on the bus. Tony looks like a used
car salesman in a dated grey suit, gold rimed sunglasses and
black leather gloves. He gets the groupies out and explains to
the band they‘ve got a very important gig tonight.
                                                                              9
AWAKENINGS – TREATMENT: DRAFT EPISODE 101

23. MUSEUM INT. DAY:

10-15 excited 8 year olds are huddled around a unique museum
exhibit – the ginormous inside workings of an Etch a Sketch –
very cool! Leticia Johnson is distracted and wonders away as
the group fades in the background. She‘s not concerned with
children‘s games and instead moves from display to display in
the American history exhibit. Leticia is more and more
intrigued by each display until she becomes transfixed on one
in particular.

We see now as we look up from her perspective what has Leticia
frozen; a haunting, horrifying mummified corpse towers above
her, its face fixed in perpetual agony.

                                    TEACHER

                                    Leticia!

Suddenly her gaze is broken and she runs back to the group,
but our focus remains firmly on the horror before us.

24. EXTERIOR STATE HOUSING IN AN OUTLYING SUBURB DAY:

A mother is screaming and wailing; her 19 year old son lies
dead in the yard in front of her. The police are already on
the scene and have the perp on his knees in the street
outside.

An unmarked car pulls up and out steps NATHANIEL BUTTERS, 46,
Caucasian, washed up, aged beyond his years, and after a brief
update from the officer on site sends his partner PHILLIPE
SUAREZ, 28, Hispanic, confident, over to collect the statement
off the mother. Despite the best efforts of her neighbour, she
is inconsolable.

To Butters displeasure Joanne Pierce arrives to cover the
story. Butters has little time for the press, and believes
them to be nothing more than parasites who prey on the misery
of others. He wastes no time letting Joanne know either.

Suarez informs his partner that the young man lying dead in
the front yard was murdered because he refused to join the
local gang. In that moment we catch a glimpse of what
Nathaniel‘s life has become. A broken record of death and
misery where those who are brave or foolish enough to stand up
                                                            10

are left slain in the very gutter they are trying to climb out
of. Butters walks over to the perp and tells the arresting
officer to clear out. He pulls the man up off his knees and
presses his face into the window of the squad car. While he
gives the perp a brief tirade about what a piece of shit the
he is, Butters strips him of the drugs he is carrying and
POCKETS IT before plunging his fist deep into the man‘s
kidney, dropping him to his knees.

25. INTERIOR FIREHOUSE DAY:

Kevin returns to the firehouse dejected. His colleague ROMAN
KEENE, 52, rugged, unflinching, can see the disappointment on
his face. Roman is a career fire-fighter, and labels Kevin a
coward for turning his back on the team. The conversation
begins to escalate when the alarm bell rings; they‘re needed.

26. EXTERIOR RENOVATION SITE DAY:

A dozen men are working on renovating the old courthouse
across town. Perched high on one corner of the grand courtyard
we look down on the busy worksite amidst a cacophony of nail
guns and hammer drills.

Inside the site foreman‘s office Sam receives high praise from
his supervisor. They recommend he extend his contract with the
lure of being made supervisor of his own site. Suddenly a
CRASH! Through the small demountable‘s window we can see a
cloud of dust billow from the other side of the yard as the
men scurry like ants from a broken nest.

Now outside we can see what has caused the commotion. Across
the yard a section of the 200 year old building has collapsed
trapping a man, SEBASTIAN DUVELLA, 52, in a pit, under a pile
of twisted scaffold. The supervisor calls out to the man who
is in agony, but at least he is alive.

Emergency services are called and the men gather equipment to
try and get him out. Soon though the SEB realises the pit is
filling with water, and he has no means of escape. Part of the
scaffold has pierced a water main. The workers try to keep Seb
calm, but he knows he is running out of time. Several attempts
to stop the water flowing fail. He‘ll be dead by the time the
emergency departments get there. Someone has to do something.
Sam jumps down and just as the water overcomes him, manages to
                                                            11
AWAKENINGS – TREATMENT: DRAFT EPISODE 101

free the man before he drowns. Seb is pulled from the hole by
his colleagues with shocking injuries.

Kevin arrives with his crew and they begin to mop up the scene
as the paramedics cart Seb off to hospital. Sam is sitting
quietly in the back of another bus, a dark grey blanket
wrapped around his quivering shoulders. A news crew approaches
and tries to interview Sam, but he declines respectfully. The
young reporter still takes his place in front of Sam and as
the light from the camera shines brightly on him Sam gets up
and pushes the camera back in the cameraman‘s face—

                                       SAM

                  I SAID NO! I didn’t do anything...

Sam walks off as the news crew look at each other, bewildered.

27. INTERIOR CLASSROOM DAY:

The late afternoon sun burns though the windows. The kids are
scattered, some painting, some drawing. We circle in on Chloe
who is masterful with her weapon of choice; a box of brightly
coloured crayons. On the paper in front of her is green grass,
a lemon yellow sun and five little figures holding hands.
Shenae comes over and looks at the drawing.

                                     SHENAE

                              Who’s that Chloe?

                                      CHLOE

                              Mommy and Daddy.

Shenae smiles. Bell rings.

28. EXTERIOR SCHOOL DAY:

Leticia and Chloe run to the curb and are picked up by MRS
NEWMAN,63, African American, a meddler with good intentions.
She is Kevin‘s next door neighbour. As they drive home they
discuss school, and their father. Chloe says she sees daddy
crying sometimes, before Leticia can shut her up. Mrs Newman

watches the girls in the rear view mirror; her eyes read
disapproval and concern.

29. INTERIOR TOUR BUS DAY:

BOBBY DONALD (20, CHARMING, A MODERN DAY COWBOY) is at his
job, taking tourists on a bus tour of the Superstition
Mountains. Through the tour we are given some insight into the
reputation of the area as a hotspot for the unexplained. He
returns the tourists back to base and counts his tips as they
exit the bus. Bobby checks his watch, SHIT HE‘S LATE.

30. INTERIOR KEVINS HOUSE NIGHT:

Kevin walks in; Mrs Newman has prepared dinner and had the
girls do their homework. It‘s late. She explains that she
needs to get to the shelter. He apologises for being late, and
thanks her for making dinner. He asks the girls what they did
at school today and Chloe shows him the picture. It breaks his
heart.

                                      KEVIN

                           I miss mommy too baby

31. INTERIOR KEVINS HOUSE CONT.:

Kevin‘s in the shower, trying to wash away the day. Staring
himself down in the mirror, he opens the cabinet and grabs a
small orange vile of prescription medicine. The label reads
Paroxetine. Kevin shakes out a handful and throws them back.
He puts the vile back a shuts the cabinet. For a moment, in
the mirror, we see a woman standing in the doorway behind
Kevin. He spins around with a fright but there‘s no one there.
Rattled, Kevin switches off the light.

32. INTERIOR COLLEGE DORM NIGHT:

Olivia and her roommate SKYE are having a typical conversation
about boys, and girls. Olivia‘s phone beeps and she rushes
outside.

33. EXTERIOR COLLEGE DORM NIGHT:

Bobby pulls up to the front of the university in his beaten up
old pick up, Olivia jumps in. He apologises for being late and
blames the UFO spooks. They tear off to pick up Nathan.
                                                                              13
AWAKENINGS – TREATMENT: DRAFT EPISODE 101

34. INTERIOR NATHAN‘S HOUSE NIGHT:

Nathan and his parents sit down to dinner. Nathan‘s mom wants
news of school, and of girlfriends. Nathan pleads the 5th.
