THANKSGIVING DAY 1621 (22.11.2007) OPEN LESSON Compiled by Olga Boltneva Aims: 1. To get students acquainted with the history and meaning of Thanksgiving Day as a harvest festival. 2. To help students empathize with the joys and problems of the first American colonists. Objectives: 1. Enact the meeting to start the celebration of the Second Thanksgiving together with the “Fortune” pilgrims. Give close retelling of the appropriate parts of the text. 2. Practise expressive, emotional speech and reading. 3. Revise the basic vocabulary in a crossword. Meanwhile give each student T’s remarks on the presentation and the mark. 4. Revise the basic facts on the history of the First Thanksgiving in the form of the crosses and noughts game (tick-tack-toe Am E) I. Warming up 1. Singing the children song of the first settlers “Mary Had a Little Lamb” II. Let the meeting to celebrate the 2nd Thanksgiving at New Plymouth Plantation begin. 1. Mary Brewster (T) opens the harvest Festival. 2. Joseph Rogers recollects how it all was 3. Edward Winslow reads out his diary entry. 4. The First plantation Governor William Bradford adds his memories. 5. Adolescent girls Constance Hopkins and Elizabeth Tilley declare the feast menu. 6. Mary Chilton and Priscilla Mullins praise Indian corn. 7. The respected king of the Wampanoag men says the Thanksgiving prayer. III. The feast begins with a tasty dish of a crossword. Students get short feedback on their performance and marks. IV Tick-tack-toe among the teams “Old England” and “New England” Choose the Governor.
