Settings – Privacy/Security 1. Public vs. Private – probably do not want to make your page/posts available to ‘Everyone’; don’t include your telephone number or address 2. Manage privacy/security by clicking on ‘Settings’ and ‘Privacy Settings’ on the upper right of your Home page 3. Be aware that Friends and ‘Friends of friends’ can see some or all of your posts and comments (i.e., your great-aunt as well as your hottest Friends) 4. Cautious Openness – Be yourself, but be aware. It may seem like you are making a small amount of innocuous information available, but your Wall may tell people more about you than you think/want 5. Every time you add/change/delete an item, a notification shows up in your News Feed and on other users’ walls and their email notifications, depending on their settings and yours 4. If you change your relationship status, people will notice (one of our pastors – the one with five children – changed his status to married a few weeks ago) 5. ‘Friend of a friend’ – depending on your settings, they’ll be able to view your photos and/or wall from your friends’ walls H. Delete – Click ‘Help’ on lower right, search ‘Delete’ in the Help Center and follow instructions (account deletes in 14 days) I. Make a page for your Nonprofit/Business/Organization – from Anne Lewis, SD Discovery Center 1. Facebook Business Pages: You can create a page for your business or organization. The benefit is that people can "Become a fan" which posts to their profiles. http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=logo#/business/?pages 2. Facebook Share: I put some code, a logo, and some tags into a table on the Center's website and voila, people can click on it and the Center's logo will post to their profiles. http://www.facebook.com/facebook?ref=pf#/share_partners.php I. Facebook Etiquette (“Save Face on Facebook” from Wired How-to Wiki) 1. One should not friend another whom they have no association or connection with whatsoever. Doing so makes you what I like to call a ‘creeper’. 2. Poke with moderation and caution (I stand firmly by this etiquette principle). 3. When speaking with someone whom you have been casually ‘facebook stalking’, try to pretend you do not know everything about them. Avoid comments like: “So, I saw you and Mike broke up on facebook…” 4. Drunken facebooking can get you in trouble… Try to restrain yourself from leaving an inebriated wall post on that cute guy or girl’s profile. 5. Additionally, writing on your own wall is somewhat of a "faux pas" (I believe strongly in this one as well). 6. Beware of potential employers browsing facebook photos. That body shot or keg stand picture might not encourage hiring. 7. One’s profile should not be overloaded with unnecessary applications (such as Superpoke, Food Fight, ect.), Facebook is not meant to be like myspace. Keep in mind that you can delete an apps box on your page and still keep its functionality. 8. Being part of too many Facebook groups devalues the ones you truly care about, try to stick to a select few (under 25?). 9. One’s popularity is based on the number of “Happy Birthday!!!!!” wallposts they receive. Do not forget to leave one on good friends’ walls on their special day. 10. Finally (for now), do use Facebook as a way to keep in touch with people whom you otherwise might not but do not let it replace actual human interaction (easier said than done). 11. Facebook is great for stalking finding people whom you only know by first name and sight. But this only works if their user pic is actually a picture of them and not their cat or their feet. 12. Be careful of the gifts you give to your friends in public. Sometimes, gifts intended as jokes are not really appropriate for public viewing. If so, give them privately. Remember that the same principle applies to Facebook gifts as real gifts: it's not the gift, but the thought that counts! 13. [From DeAnn: It’s OK to ignore any Applications that are sent to you; it’s also OK to decline to add someone as a friend.] Create Your Own Facebook Page DeAnn Hilmoe, BPro Inc, www.bpro.com Page 3 of 4 J.
