TEACHING AMERICAN HISTORY PROJECT Propaganda During World War I Grade - 8 Length of class period – 45 minutes Inquiry – Students will demonstrate their understanding of the various types of propaganda that is used during a time of war. Objectives Students will identify, classify and evaluate the methods of propaganda used during World War I Materials Notes from previous lesson on types of propaganda used. Three different World War I posters www.firstworldwar.com/posters http://docsouth.unc.edu/wwi/ Worksheet on Primary Sources – Propaganda (found at end of lesson) Activities After a review of the methods of propaganda used, students will pair up ad receive a collection of World War I posters. Together they will study the posters to identify the symbols and language used as propaganda. The students will then complete a segment of the worksheet for each poster. If time allows, the students will choose one poster form their collection and present the poster and their findings to the class. How will you assess what student learned during this lesson? Assessment for this activity will be long term. As we continue our study of American History and through our Current Events discussion there will be opportunities to reinforce these concepts of the use of propaganda. A short term assessment will occur as a section of the chapter test. Connecticut Framework Performance Standards – • interpret data in historical maps, photographs, art works and other artifacts • examine data to determine the adequacy and sufficiency of evidence, point of view, historical context, bias, distortion and propaganda, and to distinguish fact from opinion; • initiate questions and hypotheses about historic events being studied; • describe and analyze, using historical data and understandings, the options which are avail-able to parties involved in contemporary conflicts or decision making; Propaganda Posters of the Great War Complete a section of this worksheet for each poster that you study. a. 1.
