COURSE OUTLINE Title: Literature of Vampires Course Number: ENG 126 Credits: 4 Date: October 2008 Institution: Outline Developed by: Type of Program: Clackamas Community College Leslie Ormandy, English Department Lower Division Transfer Course Description: The first in a two-part series, this course examines the ways in which the genre of the book, poem, or movie, and the age of the intended audience alter the written representation of the central vampire figure, and the ways in with the portrayals interact. This class also introduces students to the basic tools of literary criticism: for poetry the use of poetics elements and structures to build the poetic work, and for stories the ways in which character, settings, plots, and language choices create the “horror” of the vampire work. ENG-226 offers students more in-depth study of the topic. Course Objectives: The course will: 1. Present the ideas of life, death, and the undead life in relation to literature about vampires. 2. Present the vampire myth and how it shifts with genre, time, and culture. 3. Explore ways in which the myth shifts depending upon religious ideas and cultural norms prevalent in the times in which any particular vampire literature is written. 4. Explore the uses of figurative language and the ways it is used to produce the tones inherent in each genre. 5. Explore the ideas of literary genres by seeing how the figure of the vampire fits the characteristic genre requirements. 6. Explore the relationship between the Christian Eucharist and the blood that sustains a vampire. Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:  Demonstrate their understanding of the role of figurative language in creating tone with the vampire genre in short essays or discussions of specific examples through production of an essay analysis of a short story or poem.  Discuss the ways vampires have become a literary metaphor (banker as blood-sucker) and demonstrate their understanding through production of an essay, picture, short story, or visual presentation such as a short movie or cartoon.  Evaluate the ways in which vampires are presented to different age-groups and the ways the presentation affects societal behavioral expectations. They should be able to   express this both verbally with specific examples, and in written form. (For instance, what happens when Count Chocula hits Thirty Days of Night?) Analyze the relationships between the presentation of the modern vampire and the social cultural construction of the vampire. Explore the role of religion and its place in authorial creation and presentation of vampires and their slayers. 44 lecture hours Letter grade (A-F) or Pass/No Pass Placement in RD 115 and Placement in WR 121.
