Your Amazing Digestive System
The digestion and absorption of food takes place in a muscular tube called the alimentary canal, which runs for over 9 meters, from the mouth to the anus. The digestive process begins in the mouth, and the average person produces a quart of saliva per day, or 10,000 gallons in a lifetime. The stomach can hold up to 1.5 liters of food, which stays in the stomach for 3 to 5 hours, takes 3 to 6 hours to move through the small intestine, and another 3 to 5 hours in the large intestine. Your stomach is the size of your clenched fist and can expand to the size of a small football which is lucky because during a lifetime a person eats nearly 65,000 lbs. of food! The average person eats 7-10 liters of food per day, but only 350 ml goes into the large intestine. Your intestines are about 4 times the height of your body. Your small intestine is about 6 yards long and about as thick as your pointer finger. Your large intestine is about 4.5 feet long and about as thick as your wrist. Your liver performs approximately 500 different functions, including filtering over one liter of blood per minute when your body is at rest.

Each taste bud is replaced every ten days. Our sense of taste is closely linked with our sense of smell. With your nose blocked, fish oil tastes no different from melted butter.

Our bodies are recreating themselves constantly – we make a new skeleton every three months, and new skin every thirty days. Every year about 98% of the atoms in your body are replaced. When you sneeze, all your bodily functions stop – even your heart! The average cough comes out of your mouth at sixty miles per hour. In the average lifetime, a person will walk the equivalent of five times around the equator. The entire length of all the eyelashes shed by a human in their life is over 98 feet.

The human eye can see seven million different shades of color. We are all blind for half an hour a day because we blink. People born blind do not have dream images. Their dreams are sound tracks without pictures. Our eyes are always the same size from birth, but only one sixth of the eyeball is seen. The human eye can detect a lit candle more than three miles away.
