Horoscopes
For thousands of years, people have believed that the position of the stars affects our lives. This may or may not be true, but there is no doubt that astrology itself does affect our lives. Most newspapers print horoscopes, and in the United States about forty million people read them every day. Many young people plan to marry at a time when their horoscopes will be favorable, while others decide not to marry because their signs are not harmonious. Some companies have hired astrologers to advise them, and one well-known businessman prefers to do his most important work at 300 A.M. because he was told that it is his most favorable hour. Perhaps, the most well-known acknowledgment of astrological influence occurred after an assassination attempted on United States President Ronald Reagan on March 30. 1981. For the next seven years his wife, Nancy, consulted a California astrologer about the most favorable times and dates for major events in the president's life, the take off and landing of Air Force One, State of the Union addresses, surgery, the signing of treaties, presidential debates, even press conferences. Of course, there are people who are skeptical about horoscopes which are said to be based on the movements of the planets in the sky. Some of them put horoscopes on trial. For example, The Consumers Association m London tests many kinds of products to see whether they give value for money. In its magazine which? It published a report on horoscopes It began by quoting forecasts for Gemini people on the very same day of March in four different newspapers: Daily express: "Good day for any kind of desk work" Sun: "A period 5aU of activities." Daily Mirror: "You can relax." Daily Marl: "This will be an unusual day." The investigators asked 200 people to read their horoscopes every day for a month. Afterwards, 83 per cent reported that the advice was of very little help at all and 87 per cent said that the predictions were not really very accurate. Most revealing of all was a test in which people born under one sign of the Zodiac were sent predictions for completely different signs. Which? Reported: Of course, if there was anything in them, predictions for their own sign should have been conspicuously more accurate. Unfortunately the results proved otherwise. There was absolutely no difference in accuracy between reading your own horoscope and reading any other one. But even skeptics can't be sure that they are not affected by what the stars say. How do you know, for example, that your employer, your best friend, or perhaps even your husband or wife is not secretly following the directions of a horoscope? Here is a set of horoscopes. They understand the importance of order and try to establish a system for their lives. Many are found in government work. Cancer (crab) June 22 to July 22 Those born under the sign of crab are very sensitive, so they laugh and cry easily. They change their minds often, but when they decide they really want something, they don't let go of that desire.
