Scope of Service
Nursing care in the Radiation Therapy Department is very varied. Here is a brief outline of
duties performed in the various areas:

Nurse Clinic:
Patients are assessed/evaluated, and then an appropriate plan of care developed. Patients also
are scheduled to Nurse Clinic for Administration of Medications, Blood Transfusions,
Intravenous Infusions, Venous Access and Wound Dressings. This clinic also has a “Drop-in”
facility. The patient can go there for evaluation if he/she feels unwell.

Recovery Room:
There are three beds equipped with monitor; Oxygen & suction set up. Patients are Assessed and
Evaluated prior to Administration of General Anesthesia. Patients are fully recovered here prior
to discharge home or to Inpatient units.

Physician Clinics:
These clinics cover many different specialties. The nurse assigned to each clinic is responsible for
all aspects of Preparation, i.e. Clinic Room, Medical Record Chart and Evaluation of patients
prior to Physician commencing clinic. The nurse also provides Arabic Translation for non-Arabic
speaking Physicians.

Teaching and Support Clinic:
Patients are scheduled here for Continuing Education and for end of treatment instructions, e.g.
Skin Care, Mouth Care, Colostomy Care and at Discharge – patient is Reviewed to ensure all
appointment/supplies are available and that patient and family are able to continue their care at
home.

Nutrition Clinic:
Patients are scheduled for Nutritional Assessment/Evaluation. The nurse provides Arabic
Translation for non-Arabic speaking Dietitians. Also the nurse is there to provide Continuity of
Care.


Miscellaneous:

The nurse carries out many other duties within the Radiation Therapy Department e.g. assist
with stretcher/wheelchair patients, Oxygen Administration, Oral/Tracheal Suction,
Tracheostomy care IVinfusion/pump management.               Assist with Procedures, e.g. IVP,
Brachytherapy, CT with Contrast, Stereotactic procedure etc. Assessing patients at Treatment
Machine if required, and provide Arabic Translation in all areas of department as required.

Hours of Operation
Saturday – Tuesday          0800-1730 hours
Wednesday                   0800-1630hrs

CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION TO SERVICE

Patients are referred to Radiation Oncology from other services within the hospital or patients are
referred from outside hospitals

Method of Adjusting to Staffing Variances
Weekly Nursing schedule done by Head Nurse. Any variances managed internally, e.g. staff
sickness and staff overtime.

QUALIFICATIONS OF STAFF

Qualifications/Licenses/Certifications Required of Staff
•   Registered Nurse as per country of origin
•   Minimum two years acute nursing experience
•   BCLS Certification
•   PALS, ACLS Certification within the first year of employment for all SNIs
