A fossil fuel formed from dead sea animals and plants. An energy resource which can be replaced. A substance that can be burned to release heat energy. An energy resource which uses heat from underground rocks. An energy resource for human bodies. Electricity generated from water trapped behind a dam. Energy stored in fuels, food and plants. The unit for measuring energy. This is not a fuel or an energy resource. It is generated using other forms of energy. ________ ________ ________ ________ ________ ________ ________ ________ ________ ________ Andy Atkins Essex KS3 Science Consultant (June 2003) Acids reverseword 1 P U R P L 6 N I T 8 R I C E U 4 P H T W O E D 9 I N D I C A L T O R I C R A 5 A L K A L C 2 L I T M 3 U N I V E R S 7 C I T D S These are the answers to a crossword. What are the questions or clues? Andy Atkins Essex KS3 Science Consultant (June 2003) Using Electricity For each statement say if it is true or false. (If it is false, say why) Electricity is only used in homes for heating and lighting. The lights in a house are in a series circuit. Houses use mains electricity, which is safer than the electricity from cells. Electricity can flow through materials such as plastic, which are insulators. Wires are made from plastic. The current in a circuit can be increased by adding more bulbs to the circuit. It is easy for electricity to flow through a wire with a low resistance. Light bulbs have a piece of thick wire inside, called the filament. A fuse is a piece of wire that glows if the current is too high. Fuses are usually fitted in plugs. It does not matter which size fuse is used in a plug. Electricity cables have four wires inside them. It does not matter which pins the wires are connected to. The wires are all covered in different coloured plastic. Andy Atkins Essex KS3 Science Consultant (June 2003) Hydrogen test Rearrange the following statements so that they are in the correct order of how we collect and test hydrogen gas, then draw diagrams (or pictures) to show how this test is carried out in the laboratory. Light the splint. Hydrogen gas is lighter than air so it rises into the test tube. The gas burns with a squeaky pop. Collect the gas by holding a test tube upside down over the reaction. Keep the test tube upside down to stop the hydrogen escaping. Put the burning splint in the tube. Andy Atkins Essex KS3 Science Consultant (June 2003) Carbon dioxide Match what you see to why it happens by drawing lines to link the correct statements What you see carbon dioxide can be poured carbon dioxide cannot be seen Why it happens carbon dioxide is colourless carbon dioxide is heavier than air carbon dioxide is odourless a chemical reaction is taking place limewater is the carbon dioxide test for carbon dioxide cannot be smelled carbon dioxide turns limewater milky acids make carbonates fizz Andy Atkins Essex KS3 Science Consultant (June 2003)
