                             BUYING BACK HALLOWEEN CANDY
TO BENEFIT TEETH AND THE COMMUNITY

(EASTCHESTER) Halloween candy can contribute to tooth decay, and some candy can even damage
orthodontic patients’ braces. Eastchester orthodontist, Dr. Joseph Comizio, will help kids avoid injury to their
braces and their teeth by buying back Halloween candy.

Comizio Orthodontics is paying $2.00 for each pound of Halloween treats surrendered in their office. One
dollar will go to the child. The other dollar will be donated to the American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina
Relief Fund. The candy itself will be donated to Food Patch.

“When we pay orthodontic patients/children for their Halloween candy, we help them avoid the potential for
harming their braces or teeth. It’s a fun way to reward the kids for their efforts on Halloween. In addition, we
help a worthwhile charity,” said Dr. Comizio.

Some candies are permissible for orthodontic patients, according to Dr. Comizio. They include plain chocolate
or soft, chocolate-covered peanut butter cups. However, Dr. Comizio cautions that patients should brush and
floss thoroughly after indulging in sugary treats.

Dr. Comizio recommends that children who wear braces avoid these foods or candies:
           Caramel
           Taffy
           Bubblegum
           Hard Pretzels
           Taco/Nacho Chips
           Un-popped Kernels of Popcorn

Parents of children who wear braces may want to check out their children’s Halloween candy and eliminate
these potential brace-busters.

Dr. Comizio notes that the days immediately following Halloween are usually an orthodontist’s busiest time of
hear for emergency calls. He is hopeful that his candy buy-back program will cut down on orthodontic
emergencies, yet help children, especially those wearing braces, enjoy the holiday.

Comizio Orthodontics office will accept children’s WRAPPED Halloween candy at the weigh-in:
