Gender and Peace in Somalia: Implementation of
Resolution 1325
Recognise the contribution of women of the Somali Diaspora as agents to
promote the peace and reconstruction in Somalia;
Support the cooperation between Somali women's rights organisations in
Somalia and in countries of the Somali Diaspora to ensure the
implementation of Resolution 1325 in Somalia;
Empower women's work within the Somali civil society to promote
women's participation in the ongoing peace process and for the planned
political elections in 2009;
Contribute to gain more attention from the international community in
favour of the political work of Somali women.

Nations Security Council
First time in history that the UN Security Council
formally recognised women’s roles in armed
conflict, conflict-resolution and peacekeeping
operations

What is Resolution 1325?
Increase the representation of women in decision-making for peace-building,
conflict resolution and peace processes
Support women’s local peace initiatives
Take into account the particular needs of women and girls in refugee camps and
settlements
End impunity of those responsible for genocide, crimes against humanity and war
crimes, including those related to gender-based violence
Take measures to protect women and girls from gender-based violence
Integrate gender perspectives into peacekeeping operations and provide training
on the rights and needs of women
Consider the different needs of female and male ex-combatants in disarmament,
demobilisation and reintegration initiatives
