American Society of Safety Engineers Oklahoma City Chapter NEWSLETTER Protecting People, Property and Environment in Oklahoma Since 1975 ® http://okc.asse.org October 2007 Now that I have shared what our Chapter has done this past month, you might be wondering, “What’s on the horizon?” Well……a lot! Some examples include:  Our next monthly meeting is Monday, October th 8 , featuring Senator Debbe Leftwich who will be discussing safety legislation and Baker Hughes Inteq will be our lunch sponsor. Soon we will begin planning our 2008 Safety Expo and golf tournament. We need volunteers for the planning committee!!! 4 Part Safety Webinar Series starts October 31st Safety Professional of the Year (SPY) st applications are due December 1 Scholarship and professional development grant st applications are due December 1 ASP review class enrollment – the class will be April 7-9, 2008 President’s Message Jim Ross, Oklahoma Department of Labor Wasn’t September’s meeting a great success! Think for a moment, we got an OSHA update by Carlos Reynolds from the Area Office, we celebrated 50 years of ASSE Membership with Mr. Demoss and thanks to Concentra, we had a great meal! The only thing that could have made it a better meeting was if someone won the “Chance for Cash”. The good news is, we raised almost $100 towards our scholarship!!! Here is a quick update on activities within our Chapter during the month of September. We had a booth at the th OSU Family Health and Safety Day event on the 8 . Leon Osburn coordinated our participation in the event and he and several other members had children draw safety and health posters. From what I understand there were some very talented artists in the crowd. The Executive Committee selected winners in each of the st three age categories. The prizes were: $15 for 1 place, nd rd $10 for 2 and $5 for 3 . All of the posters will be forwarded to ASSE Headquarters to be entered in the annual Kids’ “Safety on the Job” Poster Contest. On the 7 and 8 I attended the annual ASSE leadership conference in Chicago. My travels to and from “The Windy City” were kind of rough but the conference was great! While at the conference I had the chance to meet ASSE members from all over the world….there were several members from Australia and Kuwait in attendance. In addition to attending the various very informative and motivating workshops throughout the conference, I had the chance to tour ASSE Headquarters, which gave me the opportunity to meet the folks that keep this Great Society running. Overall, I left Chicago with many new ideas to improve our Chapter. th th      See you Monday! ASSE Oklahoma City Chapter Safety Professional Spotlight ASSE’s OKC October 2007 Safety Professional is Mr. J. M. Demoss! ASSE OKC has many dedicated and long time members; none have been with the chapter as long as J.M. Demoss. He joined ASSE in February of 1957. Mr. Demoss’ career has spanned decades. He began his safety work on off-shore oil rigs, where he helped develop and institute the use of the safety climber belt and safety slides. These innovations helped the derrick men work more safely and provided an emergency escape route if necessary. Mr. Demoss then worked with Trans World (Kerr McGee) as a Safety Inspector for refineries which increased his knowledge of the chemical plant and its various operations. His works with Kerr McGee lead him to Oklahoma City in 1966. As the Corporate Office Manager of Personnel and Administration (which also included Overseas Operations) Mr. Demoss wrote the North Sea Safety Manual for Offshore Rigs. During the late 1960’s Mr. Demoss served as the ASSE OKC Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President and President. In recognition of his dedication to oil rig safety, Mr. Demoss was inducted into the American Association of Drilling Contractors Hall Of Fame in the 1970. When asked about his Safety Philosophy Mr. Demoss states: I always told my guys that, “You may be working for the company but really you are in business for yourself.” He defines safety as: Mr. Demoss’ most memorable moment came early in his career. The first time he was boarding a drilling rig, 40 miles out in the Gulf of Mexico. In those days the personnel would shimmy up a knotted rope to the drilling rigs’ personnel landing when approaching the rig by boat. On this particular day the water was very rough and the captain decided to approach the rig using the stern of the boat to transfer personnel, although transferring from the bow was the normal routine. As Demoss began his ascent up the knotted rope the water swelled leaving Demoss dangling in mid air between the boat and the rig. Demoss recalled climbing that knotted rope like a monkey and finally making safe landing on the rig. Nowadays personnel transfers to off-shore rigs are made by helicopter. OKC Chapter Recognizes 25 Year & 50 Year ASSE Members. September’s meeting gave Jim Ross, OKC Chapter President, the opportunity to recognize long time ASSE members Tom Bauckham and J.M. Demoss for their continued dedication to the ASSE. Tom Bauckham has been a member of the ASSE for 25 years. J.M. Demoss has been a member of ASSE for 50 years. Congratulations gentlemen and thanks for your continued support and dedication to ASSE. “Safety is a way of life in which a person has the quality to keep himself and others free from danger or harm.” ASSE Oklahoma City Chapter 3 ASSE Endowed Scholarship “CHANCE FOR CASH” Fundraiser The Chapter hosted its first installment of the ASSE OKC Monthly “CHANCE FOR CASH” drawing in September. Carlos Reynolds, OSHA’s Assistant Area Director, drew the “target” card from a new deck of cards. The NINE OF DIAMONDS will remain the target card for the entire 2007-2008 Chapter year. The target card remains in the deck and the deck will be shuffled 3 times before each drawing. Anyone attending the meeting may become eligible for the drawing. Participants will purchase a ticket for $1 and there is no limit to how many tickets you can buy. Each month our guest speaker randomly selects the winning ticket to determine which lucky person will draw from the deck of cards. If your ticket is chosen from the basket, you will try to draw the “target” card from the deck (losing tickets will be discarded after each Chapter meeting). If you draw the “target” card, you win half of the pot (the Chapter will start the pot with $100). If you do not draw the “target” card, the pot will continue to grow each month until someone wins or the 0708 Chapter year ends in June. When someone wins, the pot will start over at $100 and a new deck of cards will be used. In addition, each card drawn each month will be discarded from the deck and that same deck will be used at the next Chapter meeting, so your odds of winning improve each month. This “Chance for Cash” will be at each monthly meeting held at the Francis Tuttle Reno Campus and the Safety Expo. It will not be held at the joint OKC-Tulsa meeting in November, nor will it be held at the plant tours. All proceeds will go towards the Chapter’s endowed scholarship fund.
