Mayor’s Community Service Award

The Mayor’s Community Service Award is Serve DC’s way of rewarding and recognizing the
contributions one adult has made through community service and by encouraging more people
to serve their community. The award is given on a monthly basis.

Mayor’s Youth Community Service Award

The Mayor’s Youth Community Service Award is Serve DC’s way of rewarding and
recognizing the contributions one youth, age 24 or younger, has made through community
service and by encouraging more young people to serve. The award is given on a monthly
basis.

Mayor’s Organizational Volunteerism Award

The Mayor’s Organizational Volunteerism Award is Serve DC’s way of rewarding one
government agency, nonprofit or faith-based organization engaged in voluntary community
service utilizing volunteers to address unmet human service, educational, environmental, and
public safety needs. The award is given on an annual basis.

Mayor’s Corporate Volunteerism Award

The Mayor’s Corporate Volunteerism Award is Serve DC’s way of rewarding one corporation
that engages its employees in community service projects to address unmet human service,
educational, environmental, or public safety needs. The award is given on an annual basis.

Mayor’s District of Columbia Government Employee Volunteer Award

The Mayor’s District of Columbia Government Employee Volunteer Award is Serve DC’s way
of rewarding and recognizing one DC Government employee who has made a commitment to
serve his/her community and has made a difference by meeting critical community needs. The
award is given on an annual basis.

Mayor’s Lifetime Community Service Award

The Mayor’s Lifetime Community Service Award is Serve DC’s way of rewarding and honoring
one individual who has made a lifetime commitment to community service by addressing unmet
human service, educational, environmental, and public safety needs. The award is designed to
recognize one individual who has completed approximately 4,000 hours of service to his/her
community during his/her lifetime. The award is given on an annual basis.

What are the Mayor’s Community Service Awards?
Countless people of all ages serve in numerous ways to improve their community every day -
volunteering to make the District a stronger and better place to live. The Mayor’s Community
Service Awards are an opportunity for citizens, corporations, government agencies, and
nonprofit and faith-based organizations to reward and recognize volunteers for their
outstanding community service.
       The District of Columbia Government defines service as: “A voluntary act of
       kindness that makes a difference in our community.”


What types of service qualify for the Mayor’s Community Service Awards?
The Mayor’s Community Service Awards are intended to recognize, reward and encourage
activities that have a significant impact in meeting the needs of local communities in the
District. All nominees will receive a letter from Serve DC to recognize their volunteer service.


Eligibility
Mayor’s Youth Community Service Award – Monthly
Individuals nominated must be District residents, age 24 or younger, who have demonstrated
outstanding volunteer service and civic participation over the course of a 12-month period.

Mayor’s Community Service Award – Monthly
Individuals nominated must be District residents who have demonstrated outstanding volunteer
service and civic participation over the course of a 12-month period.

Mayor’s Organizational Volunteerism Award – Annual
Organizations nominated must be located in the District and effectively utilize volunteers to
address unmet human service, educational, environmental, or public safety needs.

Mayor’s Corporate Volunteerism Award – Annual
Corporations nominated must be located in the District and engage employees in community
service projects that address unmet human service, educational, environmental, or public safety
needs.

Mayor’s District of Columbia Government Employee Volunteer Award – Annual
Individuals nominated must be current DC Government employees who have worked at least
one year in the government and performed approximately 100 hours of community service in
the District.

Mayor’s Lifetime Community Service Award – Annual
Individuals nominated must be District residents who have performed approximately 4,000
hours of service in the District during their lifetime. This is the Mayor’s highest and most
distinguished award for volunteer service.
