Triangle Family Services offers financial counseling in many areas. We can help you set up a budget, help you organize your finances to get bills paid each month, and help you deal with mounting credit card debt. If you recognize a problem and are ready to seek counseling, you have already begun to work toward a solution. In some cases, we may recommend a Debt Management Plan (DMP) that can simplify you debt payments. We recommend a DMP when it makes financial sense for you, but we may also offer alternatives that may be more suitable. Certified counselors conduct our client sessions. Our counseling services are free, but we do urge you to consider a contribution. Client Preparation Four preparation steps before your interview: 1. Book an appointment with us. 2. Complete all forms you receive before you arrive. 3. Arrive on time. Each hour of the day is usually booked. 4. Call and cancel if you are unable to make your appointment. Debt Management Plan Rules All DMP creditors have rules, including: 1. Minimum monthly payment. Each creditor usually requires that you pay 2% - 3% of the outstanding balance each month. So with $10,000 in credit card debt, you may need as much as $300 extra from your monthly income after paying all necessary expenses. 2. All unsecured debt. Creditors require that all unsecured debt (such as credit cards) be part of the plan. Also, you may not use any cards while on the program and must not seek new credit while repaying your DMP. 3. Other debt. Signature loans, payments to debt collectors, and payments to satisfy judgments often can be included in the plan. However, we cannot include federal student loans, or IRS, state, or local taxes. 4. Fees. A maximum of $30 is charged as a monthly processing fee as part of the total DMP payment. Thus, a DMP plan for $330 uses $300 for debt repayment. In addition, a one-time setup fee of $25 is charged. What Takes Place During a Session During a session, we thoroughly review your application, and ask questions to be sure that your income, expense, and debt numbers are accurate. If you are unsure about budget figures, we can help you arrive at realistic amounts for your family size and lifestyle. After reviewing income and expenses, we determine how much is left over to pay debts such as credit cards. We make sure that you will be able to pay all your regular monthly bills (housing, food, and basic living expenses) before considering debts. Depending on the debt amount, there may or may not be enough money for a DMP program. If there is, we arrive at a monthly payment amount. We will advise you of any impact that your debt problems may have on your credit report or credit score. If you bring along a credit report, we can review it with you. We may be able to pull a credit report for you on-line if the credit bureau authorizes the inquiry. Debt Management Plan Concessions In return for a DMP commitment, creditors usually will relax their policies, including: 1. Reduction of the minimum monthly payment, usually to 2% to 3% of the outstanding balance. 2. Elimination of late fees and credit over-limit fees after one to three billing cycles. 3. Reduction in the debt interest rate, often to the 8-15% range. There are no penalties to drop out of the plan. However, original fees and interest rates may be reinstated once the DMP is canceled. Debt Management Payment Details When you sign up for a DMP plan, the process works as follows: 1. You sign a DMP agreement and set a start date for debt repayment. 2. You give us your first payment in the form of a money order or cashier’s check, made out to “CCCS.” 3. We send your payment to our plan administrator, CCCS of Greater Denver. Denver sets up the plan and negotiates payments with the creditors. They then send you a welcome package, with further DMP contact between you and Denver. 4. You make future payments to Denver in the form of a money order or cashier’s check, or optionally you can have the DMP amount drafted from your checking account. 5. You continue to make monthly payments to Denver until your entire debt is repaid (4 to 6 years is typical). 6. If small accounts are paid off early, they will be closed and the remaining balance will be applied to larger debts. You may also choose to make additional payments to Denver to cut down the payment time. Debt Management Plan Example John and Mary Smith make an appointment with a Triangle Family Services financial counselor. They bring with them a completed application form and all credit card statements and bills. During the session, the Smiths and the counselor arrive at the following figures: Net Monthly Income: Monthly Living Expenses: Credit Card Debt: $2000 $1500 $15000 From the numbers above, the Smiths can afford at most $500 for credit card debt. The counselor then calculates $360 for debt payment. John and Mary thus qualify for a DMP plan. The plan will have a single monthly payment of $390 (including the $30 processing fee), which leaves them $110 per month for miscellaneous expenses not included in their budget. The counselor then works with John and Mary to identify how that $110 will be spent and includes that amount in the budget submitted to the creditors. The credit card interest is negotiated down to 10%, which means that the Smiths will continue to make DMP payments for 4 years and 4 months, and will pay a total of $3500 in interest charges in addition to the $15,000 in principal. Many creditors will view your participation in a DMP program as a sign of fiscal responsibility. However, others may see this as a negative mark. We can discuss all the credit ramifications during a counseling session. Triangle Family Services does not report the counseling session to the credit bureaus, so visiting our facility and speaking with a counselor has no effect on your credit rating.
