Dear Larkin Family, I enthusiastically welcome everyone back to Larkin this year! Many students have been off working, vacationing, resting, and even preparing for this year. Some of you have been as busy as ever, and others have been chillin’. In either case, I am excited you are here. Students are not the only people anticipating this year. Faculty members have been involved in various kinds of professional development and training to get ready for this year. Whether is was a Project Lead the Way Workshop, a Springboard training or simply reading a book that would grow them professionally, your teachers have been getting ready. Some people thought there were a lot of changes last year, but this year could feel even more different. Although most of the faces will look familiar, there were some significant changes made to how we will do business. The most notable was the change in entrances to school. It will be important that all students enter the building through doors #1 and #4 in the front of the building before school. That means that all other entrances will be locked. Once school starts, then door #4 will become the way to enter the building. (That is the entrance near the dean’s office.) Another big change made was the elimination of the “Senior Lunchroom”. We have decided to use that space for students who need more focus. Therefore, it will be referred to as the “focus room”. Students will be expected to follow some basic rules and procedures related to class, study hall and around the building. For those students who need some encouragement with these, we will assign students to the focus room during lunch for a three week period. Students who perform to expectations will be removed from the focus room and join the rest of the students in the lunch room. These are just a few of the many changes. (Please check our website for a complete list of expectations for this year.) The emphasis will be on doing the important work that needs to be done so that students can achieve their goals and feel safe along the way. Many students expressed concerns last year in surveys and face to face conversation. There were some students who met this summer with Detective Hood, called the LIDIR Group. They offered their ideas for Larkin and developed plans for accomplishing some significant goals. It is important to remember that the changes made this year were the result of a lot of work on the part of many. Teachers, students, community people and police officers all had their hand in working with the administration to develop strategies that will benefit students. We are fortunate to have the people we have connected to Larkin. There are community members, parents, students and teachers who are fully committed to Larkin becoming the great school it needs to be so that everyone is reaching their goals. I feel blessed to be a part of the team and look forward to the growth we will experience this year on many levels. Have a great year! Important Dates to Remember: Please mark your calendars!
