HISTORY OF THE HUMBOLDT SCHOOL Designed by Alton architect Lucas Pfeiffenberger and built in 1878, this original school building has been transformed into an apartment complex for Seniors 55 and older. Originally a 2 ½-story structure, the first section was built in 1878, the first addition in 1900, and the second addition in 1959. The well-designed rehabilitation offers persons 55 and older in the Alton area the opportunity to live in an affordable and beautiful atmosphere. There are four floors with varied ground-floor entrances and two elevators to the upper levels. RELAXATION AND REJUVENATION Active Seniors can participate in many local community activities. Hellrung Park, just one block North, will experience a $1 million plus renovation; providing lighted walkways, picnic shelters and barbecue grills. The Family Learning Center is a nearby facility offering free computer instruction and senior exercise classes among other things.
