World Junior Tennis Finals underway in Czech Republic
The 15th World Junior Tennis Finals got underway today on the clay courts of TK Prostejov in the Czech Republic.
8 August 2005 Issue 32
For the seventh consecutive year, the club is hosting the official ITF team competition for boys and girls aged 14 &
under. From a total of 78 countries, 16 boys’ and 16 girls’ teams fought their way through regional qualifying competitions
for the chance to compete here and vie for a place in Saturday’s Final, to be played on centre court with its new
retractable roof.
The field is wide open this year with last year’s champions Great Britain, led by Dan Cox, and Belarus, spearheaded by
Ksenia Milevskaya, failing to qualify for the 2005 finals.
In boys’ competition, USA, champions in 2002 and 2003, are seeded No. 1, Belgium No. 2, Brazil No. 3 and Bulgaria,
who’s team includes the current European Champion Grigor Dimitrov, are at No. 4. Czech Republic, also among the
seeds at No. 7, will be hoping to make the most of their home advantage.
In the girls’ competition, Russia are the No. 1 seeds with Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Elena Kulikova, two players
who have already proved themselves on the ITF 18 & under junior circuit. USA and China, who both won their regional
qualifying competitions, are seeded No. 3 and 4 respectively, with Croatia completing the top four seeds. The home
team is seeded No. 6, thanks to Dominika Kanakova and Kristyna Pliskova who are inside the European top ten.
Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Kim Clijsters and Amelie Mauresmo are among the greats who once played World Junior
Tennis. Players this week will be hoping to emulate their sporting heroes and take their first steps along the road to
becoming champions.
Line-up confirmed for Barcelona
The full line-up for the Finals of the 2005 Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas and Junior Fed Cup is now confirmed following
the completion of the European qualifying events. The Finals will be held in Barcelona on 27 September - 2 October.
European qualifiers for the Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Final are Austria, Bulgaria, who will be making their debut,
Czech Republic, France and Italy. Spain qualifies automatically as the host nation.
Czech Republic, France, Netherlands, Poland and Russia, along with Spain, will represent Europe in the Junior Fed Cup
Final.
The six European nations in each competition will line up against ten other countries, who have all qualified from their
respective continents. Last year’s Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paris champions Spain, and Junior Fed Cup champions,
Argentina, will both bid to retain their titles.
The full list of qualified nations can be found on www.itftennis.com/juniors.

JITIC draws to a close in the Dominican Republic
The Central America & Caribbean Closed Junior Championships (JITIC) finished over the weekend. This important ITF
junior tournament for the COTECC region took place in the Dominican Republic with 13 national teams participating.
The event offers players the chance to gain valuable Junior World Ranking points through the 18 & under (grade B3)
event, as well as providing valuable competition at the 16 & under and 14 & under levels.
8 August 2005 Issue 32
The event was hosted by the Federación Dominicana de Tenis in conjunction with COTECC and was held at the Parque
del Este in Santo Domingo, a modern facility built for the last Panamerican Games.
The week-long competition offered both singles and doubles play, with the 18 & under tournament being run on a
knock-out basis and the 16 & under and 14 & under events using the feed-in consolation system, allowing each player
the opportunity to play at least one match every day.
Gustavo Granitto, ITF Development Officer for Central America & Caribbean commented, “The level of play observed
throughout the event demonstrates the progress and growth of the region’s players in every age category. This event
is so important to both players and coaches alike as it allows them to pitch their level against their peers in the region,
thus monitoring progress made and determining future areas for improvement.”
For full results from these Championships, please visit www.itftennis.com/juniors for the 18 & under results and
www.itftennis.com/development for the 16 & under and 14 & under results.
Educational Forum – World Junior Tennis Final
Competitors in the 15th World Junior Tennis Finals, the ITF team competition for
players aged 14 & under, will attend an educational forum on Friday.
Experienced speakers from the tennis world will deliver presentations, giving
advice on a variety of important issues, for players preparing to make the
journey into professional tennis.
Issues covered will include media training, dietary advice and information on
how to cope with the strains of travelling. Speakers will then be available to
answer questions on any related issues.
2005 ‘Road To The Pros’ forum, London
Speakers include:
Dr Pavel Fort - Dietary advice
Frank van Fraayenhoven - Travel for young players (and its effects on coaching and the body)
Myrtille Rambion - Media training
Luca Santilli - Introduction, Davis & Fed Cup and the Olympics.
This event follows the success of the “Road To The Pros” forum, which took place in London, during Junior Wimbledon,
which all players agreed was a very beneficial experience. There will also be a forum during the Junior Davis Cup by BNP
Paribas and Junior Fed Cup competitions in Barcelona in September.
