The Vineyard and the Restaurant Winery
Hatton Estate is a family owned and operated winery established in 1992 by
Michael and Colleen Daymond-King along with Michael’s viticulturist uncle John
Rees. Their combined passion for the vine has resulted in a vineyard that is
regarded as an integral part of the wine making process.
The 40-acre Hatton Estate vineyard and winery produces a range of Estate grown
wines primarily for export with a limited release programme in New Zealand, and
the new Turtle Bay range of wines made from boutique-grower produced grapes
from around New Zealand.
Hatton Estate wines are based upon the owners love of good food and fine wine
combinations – each wine is crafted with a particular seasonal dish in mind.
Therefore Hatton Estate has become a restaurant winery, selling wines in over 475
restaurants worldwide- predominantly in the USA and UK, the two countries to
where over 70% of our production is exported.
The Hatton Estate is based in the heart of the Gimblett Gravels sub region of
Hawkes Bay, on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand. The Gimblett
Gravels is New Zealand’s only appellation based solely on soil type and is
situated on an 18,000 year old river bed which was only recently exposed when
the river changed course in 1867. This alluvial gravel bed is over 100 metres
deep, and provides a very dry and warm growing environment with excellent
drainage and especially good reflective qualities exposing the vine canopy to
more sunlight throughout the day. The vines require drip irrigation just to stay
alive as the gravel stones dry out to 1.5 metres below the surface in the summer.
Hatton Estate remains focused on creating single vineyard estate grown wines,
which reflect our commitment to quality without compromise.
