Quick Reference Guides Creating Templates in Word 2007 Creating templates saves you from creating the same document again and again from scratch. It allows you to have a foundation which you can build upon to create your final document, such as a fax header or standard business letter. MS Word 2007 comes with an extensive template library, but you can also create your own. All documents are based on a template of some sort; the default template is called Normal.dot. 1. Creating new templates You can create your own templates using a new or existing document/template. Your template can have text, images, styles, macros etc in it. Depending on which method you choose, use the guide below to help you through: From scratch 1. 2. 3. Click the Office Button → New Blank document → Create Create your document using text, graphics and formatting as required. From an existing document 1. 2. 3. Click the Office Button Click the Open button → Open From an existing template 1. 2. 3. Click the Office Button → New Select New from existing... Find and select your template, then click the Create New button Find and select the document Saving the Template Once you are ready to save your document as a template: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Click the Office Button Select the Save As option → Word Template Select Trusted Templates from My Places (Vista: Favorite Links → Templates) In the File Name field → enter a name for the template e.g. Sales Invoice In the Save As Type →select Word Template Click the Save button 2. Using templates Now that you have created your templates, each time you want to create a new document, you have the option of starting with a blank document or a document based on a template. If you select a template, all of the content and formatting included in that template will be displayed and you can amend as you wish. c a b c 1. Click the Office Button 2. Click New and you have 3 ways to select your template: a. b. c. If you used the template recently, select it from the Recently Used Templates section If a template you created is not visible, select from My Templates... You can access Installed Templates or templates from Microsoft Office Online b) My Templates... Any template you created previously can be accessed from here. c) Installed Templates Word 2007 comes with several preinstalled templates. a) Recently Used Templates Any template you have used recently will be displayed by most recently used. If you selected to Save preview picture (Office Button → Prepare → Properties → Document Properties → Advanced Properties → Summary) it will show a template preview. 1. 2. Select the template you wish to use Click OK and amend and save as a new document. 1. 2. Select the template you wish to use Click Create and amend and save as a new document. 1. Click Create and amend and save as a new document. N.B Make sure that whenever you create templates, you save them in your Trusted Templates area or they will not be visible from My Templates. N.B if you are connected to the Internet, you can browse the templates stored on Microsoft Office Online.
