INTRODUCTION
The 3 main search engines are Google, Yahoo and MSN. These three search engines in
any given month are responsible for over 90% of all internet searches. In fact Google
alone is now estimated at 75%.

However, the competition for high placement is fierce as there are an ever increasing
number of websites. So how do you get a better search engine rank? This is where
optimization comes into play.

Keeping in mind that only the search engine engineers know how the page rank and
placement is calculated, and change their methods (known as algorithms) from time to
time, there are a number of strategies you can use to SEO your site. You can subscribe
to our mailing list to keep updated with the latest changes.

While you can hire companies who offer a search engine optimization service to do it for
you, there are basically only a few things you need to know and do. A lot of people will
try and sell you “Google secrets’, or programs to teach you the mysteries of how search
engines rank web sites.

We’ll go through the basics here, and there are also some very useful SEO tools to help
you get a higher search engine rank.

SEO can be divided up into 2 parts - Internal and External. The techniques applied to
your own website are Internal. Incoming Links are external.

KEYWORDS
The word or phrase that people type into a search engine to find what they are looking
for. Once researched and identified, keywords can be used in page titles, content,
headings, descriptions, text links and metatags. They can determine your domain name,
and be used as the basis for promotions, advertising and marketing.

They can even help you find the most profitable niche within your chosen topic. If you
have a passion for pets, for example, but this is too large and competitive a topic,
research may show that ‘dogs’ will be a popular niche within the overall pets category,
and, further research may show that ‘dog training’ will be even better.

The fewer sites competing for your keywords, the greater your chance of being
positioned highly in search engine results.

The right keywords are very important as you can see.

Research consists initially of brainstorming a basic list of keyword/s that you think people
would use to find your site, then expanding them out, and determining the demand for
each one.

This can be done, for free, at Overture (now Yahoo).
Or there is a free program you can download from Good Keywords.
See my recommended keyword research tools for more.

Some startling discoveries can be made. For example, that ‘sales’ has a low demand,
while ‘sell’ is high demand. ‘Advertise’ is low, while ‘advertising’ is high. Knowing this,
you would use the word in high demand.

However, while knowing the demand is a good start to finding keywords, and to see how
popular they are, it is crucial to also determine how many sites SUPPLY those
terms. A RATIO can then be worked out, that will give you an idea of how
profitable using a keyword could be.

If there are 5,000 people searching for a particular term, but only 50 sites supplying that
exact term, then there is not a lot of competition, and it will be fairly easy to be placed
highly in a search engine for it. Especially when the site is SEO’d for it.

This then is the key to successful keyword research – comparing the demand with the
supply, to increase both search engine rankings and profitability. See my recommended
keyword research tools for more.

StopWords
Certain words are filtered out of search terms. This means you can include them in your
keyword phrase to help it make sense eg ‘make money web site’ is a search term, that
can be turned safely into ‘make money from your web site’ without penalties. Click here
for a list of SEO StopWords

Where To Use Keywords
      • In the Metatags - Title, Description and Keywords, placed inside the HTML
         head tags
      • Scattered throughout your content
      • In bold typeface once or twice on the page
      • In headings - use the Header HTML tags <H1 your keyword heading here
         </H1>
      • As near to the beginning and at the end of the body of the page, just inside
         the HTML body tags.
      • In your marketing. Use keywords in both your title and description.
      • In your text links – insert the link behind the keywords, so that only the
         keywords are displayed.
      • In your domain name

MetaTags
Place your metatags, using your keywords, between the <head> and </head> HTML
tags of the page, before the <body> tag.

       • Title : are the words that show up at the very top of a browser for any given
web page, and in the Title link in search results
       • Content : a one-sentence description containing the most important keywords
site visitors might search for, and is used by a lot of search engines as the
description of your site under the title.
       • Keywords : list of your keywords and phrases.
       • Language : a list of languages your site is displayed in
       • Revisit After : How often you would like the search engines to reindex your
site. If your content changes daily, should be daily
       • Robots : tells a spider/crawler whether it can index the page or not.

Here is an example of a set of Metatags, inserted into the HTML of www.juice-detox.com

<HEAD>
<TITLE>Juice-Detox | Weight Loss | Health</TITLE>
<META NAME="KEYWORDS" CONTENT=" juice-detox juice detox diet quick weight
loss product lose weight loss story dieting quick rapid detox healthy diet program fast
weight loss plan amazing diet easy weight loss detox diets health detoxing">
<META NAME="DESCRIPTION" CONTENT="Learn how a juice detox and detox diet
can dramatically improve your health, energy and vitality while you easily achieve weight
loss">
<META HTTP-EQUIV="CONTENT-LANGUAGE" CONTENT="EN">
<META NAME="revisit-after" CONTENT="14 days">
<META NAME="robots" CONTENT="index,follow">
</HEAD>

NICHES
Niche web sites are those who specialise in one segment of a much larger generic topic,
for example : pets > dogs > dog training.

The less competitive your niche, the greater your chances of higher positioning in the
search engines.

SEO for niche websites again means finding high demand and low supply. If you
haven’t worked out what your niche is yet, using keyword demand and supply ratios can
help you decide which is the most profitable. See my recommended keyword research
tools.

CONTENT
Content is king. Search engines trawl the net, using spiders or robots, looking for
content. It must be relevant to your topic, contain your chosen keywords, and provide
high quality information about your chosen topic. It is important to not use your keywords
too many times on the one page. See Where To Use Keywords.

Some search engines take the first sentence or two on your page and use that for your
site’s description in their results, so it is better to use the description (keyword rich) that
you want to people to see, as the first sentence on your page.

Search engines like fresh content, so it is a good idea to update it regularly. Fresh,
constantly changing content gets spidered by the search engines more often than
websites that have had the same content for years. RSS Feeds are an easy way to get
fresh content - up to the minute news and articles from your industry, on your web
pages. More easy ways to get fresh content are listed in very useful SEO Tools

TRAFFIC
The more hits your site receives, the greater its popularity and importance to search
engines. Increasing traffic through a variety of marketing strategies is vital to your site’s
success. This is quite apart from increasing traffic to increase sales. Read more on Web
Site Marketing and generating Free Non-Search Engine Traffic

INCOMING LINKS
Also known as Backlinks or Inbound Links, these are links pointing to your site from
other websites. Again, these are part of marketing, as marketing is getting your site’s link
added to other websites.

The importance of a web page is different to the importance of individual keywords.
Google ranks the importance of a website by the importance of other websites that
contain a link to your site. Get your site’s link onto as many websites as you can, but
make sure they have a PR higher than 0. A site Google rates as 0 maybe because they
are penalizing it for some reason and if you link to it, you will get hurt as a result.

Make sure links have your keywords in the anchor text and make sure they are text, not
graphical links.

See also What To Avoid To Stop Your Site Being Penalized

A Note on Page Rank (PR)
Page Rank is based on two things - the number of relevant links pointing back to your
site – each one counted as a vote by Google. And the higher the PR of the site with the
link, the more important it is. Relevant links are those which relate to your website’s
topic.

If you don’t already have it, download the Google tool bar and include the Page Rank
indicator. This indicator shows a green bar, on a scale between 0 - 10, on how important
Google ranks any web page. Download the Google tool bar

Those are the important SEO strategies, that must be done.

Following are more, minor strategies to use, remembering that every little bit helps :

OTHER SEO STRATEGIES

       • Site Map
Add a site map. This enables a search engine to find all of your pages easily.
Links embedded in menus, list boxes, and similar elements are not
accessible to web crawlers unless they appear in your site map.

       • HTML
Use only well-formed HTML code in your pages. Ensure that all tags are
closed, and that all links function properly. If your site contains broken links,
the search engines may not be able to index your site effectively, and people
may not be able to reach all of your pages.

       • Allow Indexing
On those pages you want indexed. Make sure the serach engines are
allowed to crawl your site. Use a robots.txt file or meta tags to control how
              web crawlers index your site.

       • Limit all pages to a reasonable size
We recommend one topic per page. An HTML page with no pictures should
              be under 150 KB.

       • No Text in Graphics
Most search engines don’t read pictures or graphics, so use as much text as
possible and make sure it’s relevant text. Good information and solid content
that focuses on your product and services will allow the search engines to
identify your site and give you a better positioning within those search results.

       • Use Alt Tags
for all your images, including your logo. This is text that goes behind an
image, and displays if the picture cannot be, or if hovered over with a mouse.

       • Moving a Page That Already Has a PR
If you move a page to a new URL (change its name), it will lose its PR until
the next time Google indexes it. So set up the page's original URL to direct
people to the new page, and tell them whether the move is permanent or
              temporary.

       • Don’t Dilute Your Site’s Topic
with other unrelated topics. This will also dilute your search engine ranking,
so that you will not be positioned highly for any topics.

       • Don’t Place Advertisements At The Top Of Your Pages
They will be the first item a search engine reads, instead of your keywords.

This Search Engine Optimization Tutorial brought to you by www.how-to-build-web-sites.com and
                        www.free-web-site-marketing.com. © Copyright 2006 Margo Courtney
     • Don’t Use Frames On Your Site
When a frame is generated, the page is embedded inside a special page
without any real content or keywords, so a search engine has nothing to
            index.

WHAT TO AVOID TO STOP YOUR SITE BEING PENALIZED

     • Dead Ends
All pages should have a way out or exit via a link.

     • Artificially increase a page’s keyword density
Loading pages with irrelevant words in an attempt to increase a page's
keyword density will penalise your site. This includes stuffing ALT tags that
            users are unlikely to view.

     • Using hidden text or links
You should use only text and links that are visible to users. Search engines
can tell if text is the same colour as its background for example, and will
            penalize your site.

     • Artificially increasing the number of incoming links
Don’t use techniques to artificially increase the number of links to your page,
such as link farms, or non-relevant sites. Best is links from pages without
            many other links.

     • Unnatural Links
The search engines prefer your linking to be ‘natural’, to appear as if they
were placed in the normal course of your business dealings. Not too many at
a time, not all coming from link pages, not all reciprocal links, and not all
coming from only PR 5 or above sites (looks like you bought them).

     • Using the same text in all incoming links
It isn't natural to have every website that links to you have the same text on
the link description. The natural tendency would be to have a certain percent
be the site's name, but after that it should be different descriptions. Your link
text description is a key factor for how your site/page will rank, so make sure
that you keep this in mind as you specify your preferred link text description,
or change it on different sites

SEARCH ENGINE SUBMISSION
While the search engines will eventually find your site even if you do not submit it to
them, you will get quicker results if you do. However, Google and Yahoo are both very
slow to index, and it may take weeks.

3 ways to submit your site :

DIY
Submit your website yourself separately to each major surf engine. Advantage : you get
a feel for each search engine, and as each engine has slightly different requirements,
you can tweak your information for optimum results.
Disadvantage : time consuming.

SubmitPlus has a list of the 100 best search engines that takes you to the correct page
to manually submit your site. They also have a quicker one – 10 best.

Automatic Submission
If you’re lucky, your web hosting service will have an automatic submission service to
the major search engines. If not, try these free ones :

Submit Express
eTracking

Evrsoft

Use a Program
Some SEO programs also include search engine submission. See Very Useful SEO
Tools

GETTING A HIGHER SEARCH ENGINE RANK
After applying all the steps above, you will be ahead of lot of your competition in the
SEO rankings. However, you can improve your search engine rank even further by
continuing to get good incoming links from relevant, higher PR sites.

Work at it steadily for about 3 months, addiing a few more links each week. Also work at
getting more traffic. You should see both your PR and your position in the search
engines, improve. You should also see your sales increase!

KEYWORD RESEARCH TOOLS

Rapid Keywords Review
This is the best in my opinion. It fits my criteria, and gives both demand, suggestions and
supply. It has a free 24 hour trial, with all features available in the trial. All the others that
had a free trial were restricted, so it wasn’t easy to see how good or bad they were.

Rapid Keywords is a software application, that gets its list from various sources,
including Google groups, Google suggestions, Yahoo and more. Once all the
suggestions are in, you can then get demand and supply. An additional bonus is the
number of Adwords ads on Google for each keyword. The more there are, the more
competition there is, and the more expensive your pay-per-click campaign.

The lists themselves are exportable, as well as the final results. I am very pleased with
this software, it was easy to use with user-friendly instructions. Highly recommended.

Cost $69.99 for a single computer licence, which is middle of the road. It is dearer than
some software and cheaper than others, however, the results made this a bargain.

SEO STOPWORDS
These words are filtered out of all searches. This means they can be added to a
keyword phrase in your content to help it read better.

To facilitate the indexing of huge amount of web pages, saving disk space is important to
all search engines. According to Google's home page it has indexed over 1.6 billion web
pages. Now let us consider how often the word "the" appears on an average web page.
In this particular sub-topic, only the word "the" has appeared 16 times. Therefore all
search engines (along with Google) can save a substantial amount of disk space by
removing the filter words before indexing the sites.

Many search engines use link popularity as the main factor for ranking the web pages in
the search result. Many still consider "Title" and "Meta" tags as their main on-the-page
criteria that influences ranking. Thus web masters have to be very careful that their list of
keywords does not match a search engine's list of filter words. The filter words consume
a large amount of space in the "Meta" tag, but produces no benefits.

Most search engines place more importance on key phrases that occur early in the
"Meta" keyword list or at the top of the page content. However, if those phrases contain
several filter words, the effect of later keywords will get diluted.

Again, many search engines recommend webmasters to limit "Meta" and "Title" tags to a
certain number of characters. Otherwise, if filter words are overused, they will soon run
