$353,871 TO PRESERVE AND SHARE VICTORIA’S HISTORY
Communities across Victoria will share their stories and preserve precious historical items, with
the Brumby Labor Government today announcing the latest round of Local History Grants.

Visiting Glen Waverley‟s Bestchance Child Family Care today, Arts Minister Peter Batchelor said
the latest round of grants provided $353,871 to 81 community groups.

“Community groups from Box Hill to to Berriwillock, Wodonga to Wycheproof, are keepers of an
extraordinary array of important cultural and historical material,” Mr Batchelor said.

“From grainy photos to historical diaries, council records and artefacts, these collections tell
important stories from the past, shedding light on who we are and where we come from.

“Our Government‟s Local History Grants program assists local groups to preserve these
importannt items and bring their stories to life for future generations.”

Mr Batchelor joined Member for Mt Waverley Maxine Morand at Bestchance Child Family Care
to announce the group would receive $6000.

They were joined by representatives from the Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria, which received
$10,200 to research and publish a detailed history of their organisation.

“It‟s important the history of our local community is recorded and that‟s why it is fantastic that
Bestchance Child Family Care and the Volunteer Fire Brigades Victoria will both share in funds,”
Ms Morand said.

“Both organisations have long history in the south-eastern suburbs and I look forward to seeing
what they will produce from their projects.

“Bestchance Child Family Care will use the money to catalogue, preserve and digitise their
extensive collection of historical records, photographs and multimedia items,” Ms Morand said.

“They will also develop a website where past families and clients can access the information and
share their memories with others.”

Mr Batchelor commended the recipients, many of which are run by volunteers, for their diligence
in caring for and protecting their living history and ensuring the community had access to it.

“Whether they are generated by sporting groups, volunteer fire brigades, child care centres or
historical societies, each of these projects represents a small but important piece of Victoria‟s
history. Collectively they create the rich cultural fabric of our state,” he said.

(A list of Local History Grants recipients is attached.)
