KESTREL 400 DATA UPLOAD INSTRUCTIONS
Introduction Data viewable in the Chart mode can be uploaded for long term storage, statistical analysis, and graphing in Excel. In order to do this, go to the computer labs in either Dow 294 or Dow ?. Computers in these labs will be equipped with 1. An interface cradle that the Kestrel fits into in order to communicate optically with the PC. 2. A serial cable that plugs in from the interface to a serial port in the computer. 3. The Kestrel software which manages communication between the PC and interface Connecting with the Computer 1. Verify that the serial cable is securely connected to the sockets of the PC and the sockets of the interface. 2. Place the Kestrel 4000 into the cavity of the interface so that the bottom of the unit is closest to the serial cable. The Kestrel should be facing up so that the display is visible 3. Pull the elastic strap over the unit to hold it in the interface. 4. Turn on the Kestrel unit. 5. Using “My Computer” or “Explorer” navigate to and open a folder called “Kestrel.” 6. Double click the file Kstrl1_9.exe to begin the upload procedure. A screen will appear requesting, “press any key to continue.” Do this. 7. On top menu, click “Communicate” and then “Upload Data Log.” 8. The data will then load a comma delimited file with a .csv extension to the PC. If this does not happen, check the following: a. The serial cable is securely connected to the computer and Kestrel interface b. The Kestrel is properly mounted on the interface. c. The unit is turned on. d. The proper com port is specified. The default setting for the com port is com1. If the serial cable is placed n a different com port, the setting will need to be changed. 9. Select a file name and folder to save the file. The default name for the file is formatted for the current date (yyyymmdd.csv). By default, the file is automatically sent to a “Data” directory within the “Kestrel” folder. So remember, if the data isn’t found, navigate and open the “Kestrel” and then “Data” folders. 10. As the data load, new data are displayed row by row. The upload procedure may take up to five minutes depending on the amount of data. Below is a screen shot an uploaded data file. 11. For statistical manipulation and charting, open the file in Excel. The file will not appear where it was saved unless the “Files of Type” is changed from “All Microsoft Excel Files” to “All Files.” 12. Open the file in Excel. Twelve different columns will appear.
