Starting up 1. 2. Take the laptop of your choice from the cart, being sure to gently unplug the power cable attached at the left back of the laptop. Open the laptop cover. When prompted by a panel stating that “this computer is locked…”, type CTRL ALT DEL to display the log-on screen. Enter student in both the Username and the Password areas. Open Internet Explorer (IE) by clicking the IE icon in the lower left of the screen or you can open IE from the Network folder. Click on Yes in the security panel that asks about certificates. When prompted (look in upper left corner of the screen), enter yourusername and yourpassword. Click on the small round Logon icon. Map your Z:\ drive. The Z:\ drive is your personal file space on the ITC Opal server. It is secured for only your personal use by your username and password. Right click on the icon My Computer and select Map Network Drive with the left mouse button. Be sure the drive letter is Z\. Type in the folder area: \\opal.msu.montana.edu\FL\username where FL = the first letter of yourusername. When prompted, type: msu\yourusername and yourpassword. Do NOT check reconnect at Login. Map your N:\ drive. If you need to use files from instructors or transfer files to instructors on Pccommon on Caddisnew, follow the same procedure as in 3., above, but use N:\ as the drive letter for Pccommon on Caddisnew. This server should be listed in the Folder area. If it is not listed type: \\caddisnew\pccommon in the folder area and turn on (left click) the check mark for Reconnect at Logon. Left click the button labeled “Finish.” Using the desktop applications in either the Application folder or the Network folder may require additional network drives. If the application selected, e.g., SPSS requires a network drive not currently “mapped”, you will be prompted for yourusername and yourpassword. Type:msu\yourusername and yourpassword.

Closing Down 1. 2. Close all running applications. Be sure you save the files you need to save, then click on the “X” in the upper right corner of all running applications. Disconnect your Z:\drive. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. Right click on the My Computer icon. Left click on Disconnect Network Drive. Double click on the Z:\ drive icon. Log Out of BlueSocket. Click on log out in the small Bluesocket panel (should be in the lower right of the screen.) Please do not turn off the laptop. Simply close the lid and return the laptop to the cart. Please reconnect the power cord to the back of the laptop before sliding the laptop in to its storage slot.
