Apply to be a Math or Chemistry Supplemental Instruction

Apply to be a Math or Chemistry Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leader! The Student Success Center and the Math and Chemistry Departments are looking for qualified undergraduates to become Math or Chemistry Supplemental Instruction (SI) Leaders for 2009-2010. SI Leaders hold group study sessions several times a week for Math 119, Math 130, Chemistry 120, or Chemistry 130. The SI Leader helps students review and understand course content. Pay SI Leaders will be paid $9 per hour for 8-10 hours per week for fall 2009 semester. Performance will determine continued employment for spring 2010 semester. SI Leader Qualifications 1. Junior or senior standing is preferred; second-term sophomore is the usual minimum. 2. An overall GPA of 3.0 or above is required. 3. A grade of 3.0 or above in the selected course (Math 119 or Math 130 or Chemistry 120 or Chemistry 130) is preferred; prior enrollment with the professor who is to teach the selected course is preferred. 4. Content-competency (to be determined by the selected course professor) is required. 5. Good interpersonal and communication skills (to be determined by the SI supervisor) are required. 6. Comfort and skill in public speaking are required. 7. Availability for the full academic year 2009-2010 is preferred, although continued employment will depend on SI Leader performance. Primary Activities 1. Attend class meetings of the selected sections of the course, take notes, do homework and read all assigned materials including text(s) and supplemental readings, as necessary. 2. Conduct at least two or three 1-hour study sessions per week throughout the term using strategies learned through the SI leader training workshop. 3. Regularly meet with the SI supervisor for debrief sessions. a. Discuss observations of the SI sessions. b. Discuss the creation and use of SI session handouts. c. Discuss the planning of SI sessions and use of a wide variety of learning strategies. d. Notify supervisor about problems or potential problems. 4. Hold office hours in the Student Success Center to be available for individualized assistance. 5. Assist SI supervisor in training other SI leaders. APPLY NOW!
