CWRT SART COMMUNITY COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL JOB DESCRIPTION Effective from: January, 2009 1. Description Post title: Head of Maths School: Cwrt Sart Post title of immediate supervisor: Headteacher 2. The main purpose of the post To have regard to the curriculum for the school, and with a view to promoting the development of the abilities and aptitudes of the pupils in any class or group assigned to the post holder. In addition, this post carries a TLR 2 payment for duties that include a significant additional responsibility that is not required of other teachers. Details of these duties are listed under points 4 and 5 below. Grade: Main Pay Scale + TLR 2C Payment 3. Main Duties and Responsibilities 3.1 Professional Duties To carry out those duties associated with the teaching of pupils as set out in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document (as amended): 3.2 Teaching • planning and preparing courses and lessons; • teaching, according to their educational needs, the pupils assigned to the post holder, including the setting and marking of work to be carried out by the pupil in school and elsewhere; Aiming to promote equal opportunities in jobs and services • assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils; 3.3 Other Activities • promoting the general progress and well-being of individual pupils and of any class or group of pupils assigned to the post holder; • providing guidance and advice to pupils on educational and social matters and on their further education and future careers, including information about sources of more expert advice on specific questions; making relevant records and reports; • making records of and reports on the personal and social needs of pupils; • communicating and consulting with the parents of pupils; • communicating and co-operating with persons or bodies outside the school; • participating in meetings arranged for any of the purposes described above; 3.4 Assessments and Reports • providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual pupils and groups of pupils; 3.5 Appraisal • participating in arrangements made in accordance with regulations made for the appraisal of the post holders performance and that of other teachers; 3.6 Review, induction, further training and development • reviewing from time to time the post holders methods of teaching and programmes of work; • participating in arrangements for further training and professional development as a teacher including undertaking training and professional development which aim to meet needs identified in appraisal objectives or in appraisal statements; • in the case of a teacher serving an induction period pursuant to the Induction Regulations, participating in arrangements for the post holders supervision and training; Aiming to promote equal opportunities in jobs and services 3.7 Educational Methods • advising and co-operating with the head teacher and other teachers (or anyone or more of them) on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials, teaching programmes, methods of teaching and assessment and pastoral arrangements; 3.8 Discipline, Health and Safety • maintaining good order and discipline among the pupils and safeguarding their health and safety both when they are authorised to be on the school premises and when they are engaged in authorised school activities elsewhere; 3.9 Staff Meetings • participating in meetings at the school which relate to the curriculum for the school or the administration or organisation of the school, including pastoral arrangements; 3.10 Cover • supervising and so far as practicable teaching any pupils whose teacher is not available to teach them, except in the case of a teacher employed wholly or mainly for the purpose of providing such cover, no teacher shall be required to provide such cover for more than 38 hours in any school year; 3.11 External Examinations • participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for external examinations, assessing pupils for the purposes of such examinations and recording and reporting such assessments; and participating in arrangements for pupils presentation for, and conducting, such examinations. This does not require a teacher routinely to participate in any arrangements that do not call for the exercise of a teacher’s professional skills and judgement, such as invigilation; Aiming to promote equal opportunities in jobs and services 3.12 Management • co-ordinating or managing the work of support staff working directly with or to the post holder; • taking part as may be required of the post holder in the review, development and management of activities relating to the curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions of the school; 3.13 Administration • participating in administrative and organisational tasks related to such duties as are described above, including the direction or supervision of persons providing support for the post holder in the school; • attending assemblies, registering the attendance of pupils and supervising pupils, whether these duties are to be performed before, during or after school sessions. This does not require a teacher routinely to undertake tasks of a clerical or administrative nature which do not call for the exercise of a teacher’s professional skills and judgment. 4. TLR 2C General Criteria 4.1 In addition to the duties listed above, the post carries a TLR 2 payment for duties that include a significant responsibility that is not required of all classroom teachers including: 4.1.1 Focus on Teaching and Learning: • be accountable for promoting effective teaching and learning amongst other staff and use this information to improve performance; • provide reports, as required by the Headteacher or other Seniors within the school, on the performance of the specific area of responsibility given below; • implement school policy with regard to pupil achievement; • assist pupils in setting targets for future performance; • develop positive home/school links to assist pupils progress; 4.1.2 Exercise of a teacher’s professional skills and judgement: • have specialist and up-to-date knowledge of the specific area of responsibility Aiming to promote equal opportunities in jobs and services as given below; • motivate and support other staff and encourage a shared understanding of the contribution to all aspects of pupil performance; 4.1.3 Lead, manage and develop: • work with other staff to ensure curriculum coverage, continuity and progression for all pupils, including those with high ability or SEN; • ensure effective development of pupils’ key skills; • develop effective links with the community including business and industry in order to enhance the school profile and pupil development; • contribute to the on-going identification of relevant school improvement issues; • define and agree appropriate improvement targets; • provide the Headteacher, or other Seniors within the school, information on pupil performance data; 4.1.4 Impact on the educational progress of pupils other than the post holders assigned classes or groups of pupils: • contribute to the ongoing review of school policies; • promote effective use of whole school policies on behaviour management, using appropriate referral systems to ensure that adverse behaviour does not impact upon learning; • be actively involved in contributing to the self-evaluation of the school as a whole; • plan, implement and engage in strategies where improvement needs are identified; • assist in ensuring relevant targets are met across the school; • provide support to enhance education strategies such as trips and visits and revision classes etc; 4.1.5 Leading, developing and enhancing the teaching practice of other staff: • maintain personal expertise and continued professional development and Aiming to promote equal opportunities in jobs and services share this with other staff within the school; • act as a role model of good classroom practice for other staff, modelling effective strategies with them; • monitor and evaluate standards and quality of teaching and identify areas for improvement; • plan and implement strategies where areas of improvement are identified; • assist with the induction, support and monitoring of new staff within the school including NQT’s; • act as performance management team leader for identified teachers; 5. TLR 2C Post Specific Criteria • • • • To raise standards of student attainment and achievement within the whole curriculum area and to monitor and support student progress. To be accountable for student progress and development within the subject area. To develop and enhance the teaching practice of others. To ensure the provision of an appropriately broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum for students studying in the department, in accordance with the aims of the school and the curricular policies determined by the Governing Body and Headteacher of the school. To be accountable for leading, managing and developing the subject. To effectively manage and deploy teaching/support staff, financial and physical resources within the department to support the designated curriculum portfolio. • • 6. The post holder employed under the Teachers’ Conditions of Service shall perform, in accordance with any direction which may reasonably be given to them from time to time by the authority or by the head teacher of any school in which he may for the time being be required to work as a teacher, such particular duties as may reasonably be assigned to the post holder. The Headteacher and Governing Body retains the right to make changes to this Job Description in order to reflect changes to the requirements of the post in consultation with you.
