Youth and Shelter Services, Inc. Ames, IA JOB DESCRIPTION JOB TITLE: SUPERVISOR: Youth Employment Specialist Community Prevention Coordinator
GENERAL STATEMENT OF ROLE: The Youth Employment Specialist will be located at Workforce Development Center under a collaborative joint venture between YSS and the Workforce Development Center. The Specialist will be responsible for contacting and recruiting local community businesses or agencies to employ at-risk youth, placing youth in jobs closest to their interests and/or talents, and follow-up with employers. The Specialist also provides employment skills training and mentoring. REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A Bachelor’s or equivalent degree, preferably in a human service area, personnel, education, business administration, or social work plus one year of relevant experience. JOB ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the Youth Employment Specialist is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and use hands, to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus. In addition, the Youth Employment Specialist must have the ability to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. understand and adhere to agency policies; effectively oversee day-to-day operations of the jobs program; effectively understand and maintain Workforce Development Center requirements; effectively provide timely and effective skill development to assigned youth; physically move to access all employer and Job Service locations.
RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Contact and recruit local community businesses and agencies to employ youth. Interview youth applicants and do assessment of skills, education, experience and interests, so that effective job matching or appropriate service will occur. Maintain friendly, courteous conduct in serving the public so that a contribution is made in maintaining YSS and Workforce Center image as positive and one of being a service provider. Receive job orders obtaining all pertinent information so that there is proper matching of qualified youth applicants. Communicate, cooperate, and coordinate activities with YSS and Workforce coworkers and supervisors so that a contribution is made to improve or enhance morale and an equitable workload is maintained. Follow-up with employers to insure that youth are following-up responsibly. Coordinate placement of youth at designated job sites and provide regularly scheduled review of progress, performance, attitudes, and future job availability.

Provide regular reports of number of youth served, number of hours worked, current wage, and change in employment to Youth Employment Coalition and/or to the Workforce Center. Attend all Youth Employment Coalition meetings. Contact local middle and high schools to establish job training classes and help students obtain and keep jobs. Maintain good working relations with Chamber of Commerce offices in Story County. Maintain relationships with local service clubs such as Rotary, Kiwanis, etc. Provide local groups with programs that stress youth employment. Meet with Juvenile Court Services staff on a regular basis, provide their clients with updated job listings and assist their clients with getting and keeping a job by hands-on involvement with applications and ongoing job shadowing. Understand and conform to youth employment laws. Other duties as assigned.
