2008 Camp Zoofari Summer Internship
Assist the Houston Zoo’s Education Department in the creation, implementation and evaluation
of the 2008 Camp Zoofari summer program for children 4-12 years old. The programs will be
based on topics relating to natural sciences (zoology, ecology, conservation and animal
husbandry) with the goal of increasing an understanding and appreciation of the natural world.

Minimum commitment of 200 hours from June 4 – August 22 required
o Shifts available from 7:45-4:45, Monday – Friday (6 ½ hours per day)
o Times subject to change; all changes will be communicated in advance
Attendance at camp training on Saturday, May 17th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. required
Currently enrolled at an accredited college or university in the pursuit of an
undergraduate or graduate degree in Education, Zoology, Biology, or related field.
Must have completed sophomore year of undergraduate study.
Career changers also welcome. Strong interest and/or background in science or
Two years experience working with children desired.
Experience working with live animals desired.
Candidates should be enthusiastic, creative, self-motivated, and interested in pursuing
a career in education or the natural sciences. This position requires considerable
flexibility and patience. Candidates must also be able to work well both individually
and as part of a team.
Assist Zoo staff members with administrative responsibilities pertaining to Camp
Direct teen volunteers involved in Camp Zoofari if they have questions or need
assistance with camps; manage those assisting with lunch-time supervision
Responsible for assisting with supervision of campers during lunch
Lead and assist with live animal presentations to campers (includes handling of
animals, training provided)
Assist with the implementation and development of summer camp programs
including monitoring camper drop-off/pick-up, helping with camp sleepovers when
needed, leading camp groups on Zoo grounds, assisting with and/or teaching portions
of camp curriculum
Assist in the evaluation of camp programs for age appropriateness, effectiveness,
appropriateness of curriculum for program length, use of multiple learning styles and
intelligences in activities, and action based content while seeking input and review
Complete project pertaining to area of interest upon completion of internship
Inform Camp Zoofari manager on duty if any emergencies arise
Engage in creative, age-appropriate, and responsibly managed activities with campers
Interact in a positive and educational way with Zoo guests
Abide by all Houston Zoo volunteer policies and procedures
Wear designated Houston Zoo uniform
Other duties as assigned
Exposure to outdoor weather such as heat and humidity will be required.
This position reports directly to Coordinator of Public Programs. The Assistant Director of
Education will also supervise the interns on occasion.
A small stipend is available upon completion of the internship.
