									Job Description: Graduate Intern (Stipended, FT)

Accountability: The Graduate Intern reports to the Curator of Education, Registrar, and/or the
Curator of Art & Exhibitions (depending on internship focus) as assigned.

Description: The Graduate Intern will work with the museum department of their choice to gain
professional experience in a museum setting. The Graduate Intern will develop a specific project
to implement based on museum needs, the focus area and expertise of the intern, and the time
of year in which the internship is conducted. Intern will also perform additional tasks related to
their chosen department.

This is a full-time internship for a minimum period of 12 weeks. A stipend is provided those
accepted to the internship program, and the museum will assist interns in obtaining University
credit when applicable.

Responsibilities & Duties:
I.    Interns assigned to Education:
      a) Plan and implement a specific program to be established jointly with museum staff
      prior to the start of the internship. Museum staff will assist the intern in developing and
      framing the program based on museum needs.
      b) Assist with planning of docent training materials and train docents.
      c) Give tours of art galleries and history museum to tour groups.
      d) Give virtual tours of the museum as part of the Distance Learning team.
      e) Research information for upcoming programs.
       f) Create family guides and activities for exhibitions.
      g) Teach monthly Make & Take craft program during Artwalk.
      h) Work within the art outreach program as needed.

II.     Interns assigned to Curatorial:
        a) Plan and implement a specific project to be established jointly with museum staff
            prior to the start of the internship. Museum staff will assist the intern in developing and
            framing the project based on museum needs.
        b) Assist with background research for exhibits.
        c) Assist with installation and deinstallation of exhibits.
        d) Conduct ongoing research for artist files.
        e) Assist with ongoing care of the museum’s collections, which includes data entry,
            accessioning, deaccessioning, inventory, and conservation care.

Additional Responsibilities:

1. Meet biweekly with supervisor to review issues, project progress, and work experiences.
2. Execute and present a finished project or program for use in the museum.
3. Submit a 3-4 page written evaluation and summary of the internship at end of semester.
4. Responsible for filling out own time sheet in a timely manner.
5. All staff members are expected to answer phones, interact with visitors, and assist each other
   with projects as needed
6. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
1.      Must be enrolled in a graduate museum studies, art history, art education, or history
program. Consideration will be given to undergraduate students enrolled in a museum studies
program on a case-by-case basis.

Skills/Abilities:
1.       Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
2.       Knowledge of or experience with standard museum procedures.
3.       Strong organizational skills.
4.       Ability to use PC and standard suite of office software.
5.       Demonstrated research skills utilizing both traditional and digital resources.
3.       Ability to work independently on assigned tasks, seeking help as needed.
4.       Holds a valid driver’s license.

Physical Requirements
This position requires a moderate level of physical activity. The employee must be physically
able:
        To sit, stand, walk and climb stairs throughout the facility for extended periods of time on
                  any workday
        To lift and carry at least 30 pounds
        To bend, stoop, and lift to move and retrieve materials
        To move crates off trucks for unpacking, packing, and storing
