Environmental
Considerations
               The Environment
HMM has been a member of
the Clean Cargo Working
Group since 2005.
The mission of this group is
to foster the continuous
improvement of the
environmental and social
performance aspects of
freight transport by sharing
information and promoting
best practices in the industry.
                 The Environment
In a recent study with the World Economic
Forum, “researchers found that the entire
container voyage from China to Europe is
equalled in emissions by about 200km of long-
haul trucking in Europe.” (Beat Simon, Agility).
Rail infrastructure is essential. Unless goods are
moved by rail (Europe long-haul), the hinterland
area of a port is severely restricted.
                  North Adriatic Ports
… a new gateway to Europe?
Competition with North European ports, Black Sea
       ports, and with each other.
Some ports not so highly developed as NCP and with
limited infrastructure. Could be limits on volumes.
Still beaurocratic practices and lack of streamlined
       processes and ICT.
However … improvements have been made, there has
been movement eastwards and growth in CEE /
projected growth in SEE has increased critical mass of
       cargo.
