Current At-Large Senator of the Student Senate for
California Community Colleges, Narjis Sarehane was born in
Morocco. Being blessed to have ambitious parents who wanted
her to experience the best educational system in Morocco, she
pursued her studies from an early age in the Lay French Mission
of Morocco. She earned her French Scientific baccalaureate
diploma in mathematics, awarded with honors. Growing up in a
multicultural environment, Narjis has visited many places including Paris, Madrid, Brussels, Montreal, Ottawa, and
Las Palmas. Through these experiences, she has become informed about and sensitized to politics and diplomacy.
Thanks to her French baccalaureate, she was destined to study in one of the Engineering Schools in France, but she
preferred to pursue her studies in California, as an International Student, not only for experiencing a new educational
system, but also to get an education from one of the most prestigious and top ranked universities in the World.
Sarehane plans to earn a Bachelor of the Science degree in Engineering. She is expecting to specialize in cutting
edge technology and to develop an international and technological exchange between the United States and her
During her first year at American River College, Narjis wanted to get involved on her campus and give
something back to the community. She joined the International Students Association and soon was elected Secretary.
Through this organization, she became more aware of issues which concern her as well as other international
students, such as tuition increases and the lack of recognition of international students at the state level. While
campaigning for Senator At-Large, Narjis attended her first General Assembly in the spring of 2008. Being part of
an underrepresented group, she wanted to get involved into the SSCCC and participate in statewide student
government. She decided to be part of the Student Senate, because she desired to bring more diversity to the group
and also to share a different approach that could help to reassert the value of education. She also aspired to enhance
her leadership skills, as well as learning more about political impacts on education. She wishes to bring leadership
and activism concerning education back to her country.
Besides her studies and student advocacy, Sarehane loves spending her time discovering America, its
culture and customs, history, and socializing with new people coming from different cultural backgrounds. She also
tutors French, Spanish and Arabic, which she speaks fluently.
