Description

The Transplantation Research and Tissue Typing Units were established in 1982 as
the research component of the Organ Transplant Program at the Beilinson (currently
Rabin Medical Center). The Transplantation Research Unit, headed by A.Yussim,
M.D. and the Tissue Typing Unit, headed by T. Klein, PhD, each operates a
laboratory employing permanent laboratory technicians and assistants. They also
periodically host medical students as well as physicians doing graduate or
postgraduate research. Both laboratories work in a coordinated fashion to contribute
to the research effort. The majority of studies are funded by academic and industrial
research grants.

Research and Teaching Activities

Research Interests:
In general, the research interests of the department is focused on:
  1. in vivo immunobiology of allograft immune response
  2. organ preservation and viability
  3. development of new methods for minimally invasive diagnosis of rejection,
      viral infections or other complications
  4. scientific evaluation of novel immunosuppressive protocols

Research Implementation
Our research has been implemented in clinical practice for differential diagnosis of
rejection and complications, in establishing novel therapeutic protocols and in
monitoring the posttransplantation course and immunosuppressive treatment.
As a result, after neutralizing anti-HLA antibodies, we have been able to successfully
perform for the first time in this country transplantation with living kidney previously
deemed incompatible with its recipient. In addition, we have achieved the reliable
differential diagnosis of rejection in minimally invasive biopsies thereby improving
transplantation success rate by judicious utilization of new immunosuppressive drugs

                                          378
and strategies. For example, the use of plasmapheresis and intravenous infusion of
IVIG for successful control of humoral rejection, which was previously considered to
be intractable.

Teaching
The staff of the Research and Tissue Typing Units is also very active in lecturing
students, departmental and hospital staff on topics of transplantation biology, post-
transplant monitoring and immunosuppression.
The following doctoral and post-doctoral candidates have conducted their research
thesis at our Research Unit:
