friends for referrals and taking time to investigate the

Whether a patient is interested in reconstructive surgery (cor-

cosmetic surgery (appearance-enhancers such as breast augmenta-

into the surgeon’s education, training and expertise, Will said.

WHO IS RIGHT FOR YOU:
Psychologist or Psychiatrist? by Christine Miller Ford
Determining which type of mental health practitioner and, ultimately,
which provider you need requires an understanding of the differences
in their education and training, as well as an assessment of your needs.
When it comes to treating depression, anxiety and other condi-
tions that affect one’s mental well-being, the first step is often the
most difficult, said Dr. Steven Israel, a psychiatrist based in Rockville.
Simply acknowledging that a problem exists and then making an
appointment with a mental health professional is key, said Israel, the
medical director for Potomac Ridge Behavioral Health.
How does a patient know if he or she needs to see a psychiatrist—
a medical doctor who can prescribe drug therapies—or a psycholo-
gist, who specializes in how a patient processes thoughts and emo-
tions and who is trained to deliver psychotherapy? Or perhaps a li-
censed counselor or social worker would better fit a patient’s needs?
“It’s a complex marketplace out there,” Israel said. “What’s most
important is to be proactive and talk with someone. Once you’ve
done that, then you’ll be able to get an idea of what you’re dealing

with and the treatment options that are available.”
A thorough exam by a psychiatrist would give a patient an under-

person must complete a four-year, post-graduate degree in an ac-
credited optometry program and pass a national certification exam.
Some optometrists also complete a one- or two-year residency in a
sub-specialty such as ocular disease, said Wong, whose practice is
based in Kensington.
For many patients, an ophthalmologist—a medical doctor
specially trained in caring for eyes—is the choice that makes the
most sense, said Dr. James Heltzer, whose practice, Champlain
Ophthalmology, is located in Bethesda.
An ophthalmologist, he explained, is trained in all aspects of
medical and surgical diagnosis, as well as in the treatment of
eye diseases. After completing four years of medical school and
at least one additional year focused on general medicine or sur-
gery, an ophthalmologist also completes years of training in eye
care, he said.
Heltzer specializes in treating glaucoma and also helps pa-
tients with conditions such as eye infections. Because many of
the patients he sees have chronic conditions, he comes intimate-
ly familiar with their health needs, he said.
“Developing long-term relationships with my patients is very
satisfying,” said Heltzer, who has been in private practice for a
decade.

Appelbaum, who has been practicing for more than 20 years,
