FLOW FORECAST FOR THREE GORGES RESERVOIR, CHINA (2004)
Location Type of Project Client
Yichang on the Yangtze River Inflow forecasting China Yangtze Three Gorges Project Development Corporation
Description
The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River is constructed to meet the increasing power demands in China and to reduce flooding along the Yangtze River. In addition to the 26 hydropower units, the dam is equipped with 66 spillway gates at three different levels, as well as ship locks and sediment and debris gates. The purpose of this project was to develop an inflow forecasting system, mainly to provide decision support for the operation of the dam, so that the power production can be maintained while ensuring sufficient storage to control river water levels downstream and avoid flooding
The forecasting system was developed by DHI in cooperation with the Yangtze River Commission. The core of the system is a tailored MIKE FLOOD WATCH installation, which imports meteorological and hydrological data automatically to forecast the reservoir inflow over the coming days. Based on user-specified planned power production the system also calculates the required operation of the different spillway gates to maintain given target levels in the reservoir.
