           AHRC National Research Training Scheme in English Language
              and Literature, Palaeography and the History of the Book

The AHRC National Research Training Scheme in English Language and Literature, Palaeography and the
History of the Book has a limited amount of funding available to assist UK universities in the organisation of
subject-specific (rather than generic) research training events in these subject areas for UK-registered
MPhil/PhD students.

University departments may apply to the Scheme for research training event funding following these guidelines
and using the attached application form.

    1. The funding is to be used for the purpose of providing a subvention towards defraying the registration
         fees for UK-registered MPhil/PhD students only. The aim is to off set certain costs which might
         normally be recovered from registration fees set for students in this category, thereby making the
         training free-on-delivery, or available at a greatly reduced rate for such students.

    2. The support available from the Scheme must used to bring the specialist subject training to students.
       This would include transport and accommodation for specialist teachers to travel to your institution to
       make their presentations and costs involved in providing the facilities for the presentations to take
       place. The funds must not be used for students’ travel costs, accommodation or meals.

    3. The unique subject-specific training element (which is frequently delivered by means of a panel session
       or sessions) must be clearly identified in the space provided on the application, which should be
       accompanied by a full programme for the event.

    4. A budget for the event should be detailed in the space provided in the application form, with the costs to
       which the Scheme is being asked to contribute clearly identified.

    5. The event must be listed on the Scheme’s online event’s system. Offering institutions are provided
       access to this by the Scheme’s Administrator on request.

    6. MPhil/PhD Students who wish to attend under the free/reduced rate made possible via the Scheme
       must use the online event system to register.

    7. All publicity (printed and electronic) for the event produced by the offering department/university must
         indicate that support has been provided by the AHRC National Research Training Scheme in English
         Language and Literature, Palaeography and the History of the Book.

    8. If your application is successful, you will be notified of the amount you have been awarded by the
       Scheme’s Administrator. After the event, you should send an invoice to the Institute of English Studies
       for the amount you have been awarded so that payment can be processed.

    9. At the event, students should be provided with an evaluation form in order to assist in gathering
       feedback.

    10. A detailed report about the event must be provided after the event, and should include:
                     a summary of the day's events;
                     how many students attended;
                     from which universities they came;
                     student feedback from evaluations
                     feedback from presenters; and
                     any other details the organiser(s) wish to include.

    11. Completed applications should be submitted to: The Administrator, AHRC National Research Training
        Scheme in English Language and Literature, Palaeography and the History of the Book, Institute of
        English Studies, University of London, Senate House, Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU. Email:
