Further instructions for postgraduate students at the Faculty of Law
If you have finished or will finish your degree by the end of the current academic year, this letter
requires no action on your part. The Faculty will hold the last graduation ceremony of the
academic year 2008 2009 on 8 June 2009.
A student who intends to pursue studies must register for attendance at the University. A
postgraduate student, upon whom a registration block has been set in the monitoring of
postgraduate study progress, may register as an attending student only after the Faculty has
approved his or her research and postgraduate study plan.
To be able to register as an attending student for the academic year 2009–2010, you must submit
your updated research plan and personal postgraduate study plan to the postgraduate studies
coordinator in the Faculty Office by 20 April 2009.
However, you may register as a non-attending student and present your research and study plan
to the Faculty at a later date. By registering as a non-attending student, you will retain your right
to pursue studies at the University.
In the research plan and study plan required for registration, or in a separate cover letter, you
must indicate your name, contact details (address, email, telephone), major subject, appointed
supervisor and other supervisors, if any (also from outside the University of Helsinki). The
research plan should include a report on the progress of the research so far and a plan and
timetable for the completion of the research. The personal postgraduate study plan (max. 1 page)
may also be a freely written statement. The Faculty Office will check whether your forms need
to be supplemented.
If you have submitted your dissertation for preliminary examination or your Licentiate thesis for
examination, write a brief report to the postgraduate studies coordinator of the studies you have
completed; you need not submit a separate research plan.
Research and study plans submitted to the Faculty Office by the set deadline of 20 April 2009
will be forwarded to your supervisor for a statement. You must also contact your supervisor
personally during his or her consultation hour and receive study guidance. It is recommended
that in this consultation session supervision arrangements and other study-related issues as well
as reasons for the delay in studies and research be discussed and improvements sought.
In the autumn of 2007, the Faculty Council approved recommendations for the principles of
good supervision in the Faculty of Law doctoral programmes. These recommendations can be
found in Finnish at

If you have not been appointed a supervisor, contact first the professor in charge of your major
subject, and if necessary, the head of your department.
Once your supervisor has submitted his or her statement to the Faculty Office, you will be
informed whether your plans have been approved. If your plans were approved, the Faculty will
remove your registration block and you may register as an attending student. If your plans were
rejected, you will be requested to revise your research and study plans. If your supervisor does
not recommend approving your research and postgraduate study plan (or you wish to revise them
at a later date), you may register as a non-attending student.
Research and study plans submitted to the Faculty Office after the set deadline will be forwarded
to the relevant supervisors. In such a case, however, it may be possible that there will not be
enough time to process your plans before the closing of the registration period for the University
on 31 August 2009. Those postgraduate students whose plans could not be processed by the
closing of the above deadline must register as non-attending students. Once the registration block
has been removed, you may change your status from a non-attending student to an attending
student any time during the academic year.
A time limit may be set for the revision of rejected research and study plans. If the plans are not
revised by the set deadline or in an approvable fashion, they will be rejected. The rejection will
be formulated into a Dean’s decision with grounds and instructions for appeal.
You may also waive your right to pursue postgraduate studies by submitting a written
notification to the Faculty (see the instructions contained in the letter from the Student Services
Office). An English-language form for this purpose can be found at
http://www.helsinki.fi/opiskelu/opinto_oikeudet.html.
Further information can be obtained from the Postgraduate Studies Coordinator in the Faculty
Office.
Kind regards,
Jutta Kajander
