                          WOUND COLLECTION INSTRUCTIONS

                                   FOR MICROBIOLOGY

WOUND, SPECIFY SOURCE (INCLUDES GRAM STAIN)

 Indicate when ordered whether wound is superficial, open/closed, deep, post
op/surgical, decubitus ulcer or diabetic ulcer.

 Indicate specific location on body also. Clean wound surface with alcohol. For
superficial wounds, collect with swabs using Culturettes with preservative.

 Follow instructions on Culturette package.

Surface lesions (superficial wounds) must be sampled carefully. It is
imperative that the surface lesion be opened and the advancing edge of the
lesion firmly sampled. DO NOT sample areas of healing. Surface lesions
are NOT accepted for anaerobic cultures. For aspirate, deep wound,
exudate, etc., anaerobic cultures are usually desirable and should be
requested. Use appropriate aerobic and anaerobic transport media.

Deep areas rather than lesion surface and tissue/aspiration rather than
swab are preferred for anaerobic culture. (Also refer to Culture Anaerobe
for proper use of anaerobic transport media obtained from Microbiology
                 only).

 All wound swabs will be screened for excessive squamous epithelial cells as
well as the amount of neutrophils seen on gram stain.

 Specimen if found unacceptable for aerobic and/or anaerobic culture WILL BE
          REJECTED.
