Education Stats: East Cobb Elementary Schools
Every school year, Cobb County students are tested on a variety of state and system-wide assessments. The Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) is adminis-
tered in September to students in grades 3, 5 and 7. Administration of the ITBS allows the district to compare the performance of students to that of other
students across the nation who took the same test at the same time of year. According to the results noted below, East Cobb Cobb County elementary school
students performed well above the national average on the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills. For complete results visit www.cobbk12.org.

SAT Stats: East Cobb High Schools
The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) and the American College Testing (ACT) are offered by The College Board several times during the year. These
tests are not required by the state or school system, and are not administered by Cobb schools; however, most colleges and universities use SAT and/or ACT
scores in determining student admission. The SAT is used to predict a student’s potential for success in the first year of college and is required for admis-
sion to most colleges and universities. Most college-bound students take one or both of these tests during either their junior or senior year. The following
chart displays SAT scores from the Class of 2009 (the last available scores released from Cobb County School District) attending East Cobb high schools.

local Church Creates Garden for Community
By Brittany Hall
The garden produce is given to Center for Family Resources
to be dispersed to those who are in need.
The pastor, Rev. Byron Wells, has noticed a positive
impact on his church body. “It is really great to see the posi-
tive energy that has risen through this project,” Wells said.
“Their vision for it is amazing.”
The benefit of working together in nature is not just for
the avid gardener or able bodied worker. Abernathy said it
focuses on community building in their church and through-
out East Cobb. “It is great for people who can’t be very
active but want to help the community,” Abernathy said.
“We have several members who have a lot of knowledge
about gardening that has helped us get started.”

To Catch All the Action
The best place to seek God is in a garden. You can dig
for him there. -George Bernard Shaw
In the summer heat, you might find any one of Chestnut
Ridge’s church members like East Cobber Debbie Abernathy
giving thirsty plants a refreshing shower. The next day, you
might see senior pastor Rev. Byron Wells among the squash
and peas. Chestnut Ridge Christian Church has taken the
community garden to mean just that – by the community and
for the community.
The garden began last year when the back lot of the
church property became vacant. This provided an expanse
of land with no given purpose. Church members – including
both green thumbs and novice gardeners– built raised beds
to grow a variety of squash, cucumbers, tomatoes and other
vegetables. “It was rough at first,” Abernathy admits. “But
now it is flourishing. This summer we just gave 50 pounds
of produce.”
The community-based garden has many hands involved.
From Sunday school classes, to children, to church visitors,
the garden is well looked after. Without the use of pesticides,
the organic garden takes a lot of work. “We try to have one
work day a week, for about an hour,” Abernathy said. “We
have watering schedules that involve a range of volunteers
from children to older members.” Support Our
“It is a great way to help the community by providing Advertisers
fresh produce, with the added benefit of fellowship,” said
Debbie Abernathy, church member and garden organizer.

Modern Day Masala:
indian Cooking for the Modern Day Mom
By Keren Goldshlager
Sharma first discovered her love of Indian food on a trip
to visit her husband’s parents who live in India. She learned
about Indian cooking from her mother-in-law and used her
newfound knowledge to begin teaching Indian cooking classes
upon returning home. She started pre-bagging spices to save
class time, and when one of her students mentioned that
they’d love to purchase the pre-made spice blends, the seed
for Modern Day Masala was planted. Modern Day Masala
products are sold with recipes and can be mixed with just a
few fresh ingredients to create meals that can be cooked in
about 30 minutes.
Now, Modern Day Masala sells its six signature products
in 11 states. In addition, the company just got approval to
