Talking about likes & dislikes Powered By Docstoc
Aim: Help students express what they like and dislike with respect to personal and
     social life.

Duration: 1 hour

Materials: Video clips, handouts, whiteboard, PowerPoint presentation.

Procedure:
Step 1- Students are shown a few video clips (less than 2 minutes) in which they can
see different scenes depicting nature, animals, certain incidents of people’s
        social life etc.

Step 2- Next, the teacher interacts with the whole class by asking some questions
relating to the video clips they have just watched.

Teacher can ask “Do you like the scene in the first video clip?, What did you
see in it?, Why do you like it? How about the second clip? Do you like it or
not? If you don’t like it, tell the reasons why you don’t like.

Step 3- Students work in group of 4 or 5. They are asked to talk about things/activities
they like or don’t like to do in their free time. While they work, teacher
focuses their attention to the langue structure they need to use when they talk
about likes and dislikes. Teacher shows a few sentences like the ones below to
focus their attention to the form.

E.g.

I like pop music but I don’t like classical music because it makes me
bored to listen to. However, my father likes classical music very much
but he doesn’t like pop music. He never watches pop musical program
on TV. He says he hates them because they don’t appeal to emotions

.
Further, they can talk about things they don’t like or activities they don’t like to do
with reasons. Possible topics are food/drinks, dresses, sports, personal qualities,
movies, music, countries, weather, languages, festivals (cultural, social or religious),
jobs, animals, hobbies, transport etc.

Step 4- Now they can do a brief presentation. This can be done on group wise. One
member from each group can present it as a survey report of what the members of
his/her group generally likes or likes to do in regard to the topics they discussed in
step 3 and don’t like or like to do.

Step 4- Next, they remain in group but this time they are free to interact with other
groups. Here they go to other groups and meet any member and ask questions to
complete the chart given below. Each student must interview three.

E.g. A: Excuse me. Can/May I ask you some questions?
B: Yes, of course. What do you want to know?
A: I want to know what kind of movies, music, sports and jobs you like.
     B: Ok.
A: First tell me what kind of music you like to listen to.
     B: Country music
A: Ok. How about pop music?
B: I don’t like it much because the music is loud and fast.
     A. Ok. Thanks. My next question is about sports. Do you play any sports?
     B. Yes/ No …………………………………………..
     C. (to be continued)

     1

     2

     3

Step 5- Write a short paragraph using the date above.

E.g. Nok likes country music very much but she doesn’t like pop music because she
says pop music is very fast and loud. She likes romantic movies because they make
her mind feel relaxed………………………………………………………………….
