THE FORECAST
Preacher’s Part
Have you already made all the New Year’s resolutions you will ever make? We know we could do better at a lot of things; but, after a while, we become extremely complacent about our shortcomings, and we just accept the fact that we are comfortable with whom we have become. We could count our calories better. We could exercise a bit more. We could be a bit more careful with our budget. But all of that would take an effort we are just not willing to make, so why even bother to think about it, and we don’t. So it can sometimes be with churches that are long-established. The members admit they could do a few things better, but why bother? Complacency reigns supreme! But, …. No! Not here and not now. There is just too much that needs to be done to sit idly by and do nothing. Our Long Range Planning Team has been working for the last year, examining our church, our community, our patterns, our history, and hoping to inspire the church into new areas of ministry and growth. We believe that the best years for First UMC-Lompoc are still ahead of us. At this year’s All-Church Conference we will examine the work, the vision, the goals, and the mission for our church that come to us from the Long Range Planning Team. This will be at the Potluck Luncheon following worship on January 11, 2009. I hope you will plan to be here to look at these plans and give your whole-hearted approval. I hope that we will have a large turnout from the whole congregation. I hope that you will want to read the plans and dreams we have for our church. I hope that we can inspire people to get behind some of these proposals and help build a new and exciting ministry here in Lompoc. We can do it. With God’s help, we will do it. Love,
`

Train Hard: “ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 3:20 In his book, Lone Survivor Navy SEAL, Marcus Luttrell recounts his experience of fighting 200 members of the Taliban with his teammates on Operation Red Wing. Prior to unfolding the events of that deadly fight, Luttrell describes how brutal and intense his SEAL training was. He provides vivid word pictures of the demanding drills they were put through to prepare for dangerous, unpredictable, and deadly situations. They knew the only way to overcome was to train hard and commit to memory the survival skills they were learning. Take an inventory of your survival skills. Could you overcome the enemy with truth? Have you hidden the Word of God in your heart so that you know what truth is? We are inundated with media, pop-culture, and relativistic thinking so that, if we are not daily filling our heart with the truth of God’s Word, we may unknowingly adopt the world’s version of what truth is. The closers on the main doors to the Narthex/Sanctuary are getting rather weak and need a little assistance at times to get the doors fully closed and locked. Every one is encouraged to make sure that the doors are "latched" after they pass through those doors other than at times of worship. Eventually the doors/hardware will be replaced, but in the meantime we need to be vigilant in protecting our facility.
To volunteer, call the church office and be connected to the right project for you.

Pavlo is a dynamic composer, guitarist, and singer, who has created a unique style best described as “Mediterranean music.” Mixing the sounds of Greek Bouzouki with Flamenco and Latin influences, is what Pavlo says was the “natural progression” of combining his Classical and Flamenco training with his passion for Greek and European sounds. WORSHIP Planning for 2009…
1st UMC needs liturgists, ushers, communion servers and greeters for 2009. We are preparing a schedule of liturgists, ushers, communion servers and greeters for the first four months of 2009. Training will be provided. Liturgists take part in the worship service, including leading the Call to Worship and the Affirmation of Faith, and preparing and giving the Consecration Prayer. Ushers hand out bulletins, take the offering, and assist in the first-Sunday-of-themonth communion. Ushers serve for one month at a time. Communion servers assist with communion, which is shared on the first Sunday of each month. Greeters give a warm 1st UMC welcome to those in worship on Sunday mornings. Greeters may sign up for one week or one month, whatever works best for them. If you feel you have a gift for one (or more) of these roles, please sign up on the sheet in the Narthex or call the church office to volunteer. Thank you for considering this way to help one of these 1st UMC worship teams.
family AND YOUTH ministries A new ministry at FUMC…
At various points in life, everyone faces periods of crisis, transition, or difficulty. During these times people can receive great benefit from a caring relationship with someone who will faithfully listen, empathize, pray with them and for them, and encourage them with Christ’s love and care. In October, 2008, the Joint Council approved a new FUMC committee – to develop a Lay Pastor Program at FUMC.

January Sharing Tree
JANUARY FEED THE HUNGRY
M IS
SI ON
SC OR
NE R
Our Sharing Tree this month is extremely urgent. Funds are very low for our “Feed the Hungry” program; and, if funds do not become available, we will have to discontinue the program. In May, we should begin our 4th year. In past years, we have been blessed to have the support of the Endowment Trust Fund; but, as we are all aware, there will be no profit from the stock market to share this year. Many members of our congregation have donated their time and effort to help feed the 35 to 40 people on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Now we must ask for your financial support as well to continue this worthwhile program. Please make checks payable to the 1st UMC and on the memo line note: Feed the Hungry. As always, thank you for your generosity to our Sharing Trees. None of these Sharing Trees would be possible without your support. With your continued support, First United Methodist Church is changing the world for Christ. Mission Outreach
THANK YOU Dear Rev. Steve and First United Methodist Church, Thank you so very much from all of us in NAMI-Lompoc for contributing so much to our Christmas Party for the mentally ill – some of them homeless – of our community. Those delightful gift bags, full of items that showed so much thought for what would bring Christmas cheer, were a hit! There were such great ideas in those bags! And, in addition to that, for you to provide $235 to NAMI-Lompoc for additional expenses on top of the gift bags, is so very, very much appreciated by our small organization. Your Christmas kindness and thoughtfulness made many feel cared about, and your cash donation has brought much encouragement to the NAMI-Lompoc members. Our cup runneth over, and that is such a joyous feeling. A blessed Christmas to you all and to your church. Marilyn Treusdell, NAMI-Lompoc Secretary-Treasurer.

JUNIOR HIGH YOUTH GROUP
Hey everybody! I'm so excited about our New Year. I will be teaching a class on Sunday mornings for the Jr. High youth group. The students and I are very excited about this new step. The Jr. High group will continue to meet at the same time as the High School group on Sunday night. We have some exciting opportunities to explore this year, and I can't wait to get started! God bless! Dori
United Methodist Youth
Wow, what a busy season we have had! December was an exciting month for the youth group. We had our Christmas party, which was a blast, as well as attending the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Christmas party. We also fed the hungry, where we gave out gloves, hats, and scarves to everyone who came through our line. What an awesome group of children we have; we should feel very blessed to have them in our lives. If you ever want to know what’s going on in the MYF, ask one of them. I have no doubt that this year will be even better. God has truly blessed us with great kids. May God bless us all. Michelle B
