Computer Applications Unit Excel Lesson Charts and Graphs Practicing

8th Computer Applications Unit 4: Excel Lesson 8: Charts and Graphs Practicing Project 1. Use this chart below to create your own pie chart, and data sheet in Microsoft excel. You may also view these charts on the 8th grade handouts page to see them in color. Sheet 1 2. Begin by opening Microsoft excel and typing your name at the top. Underneath it type lesson 8, then type pie chart below that. Save as L8prac.graphs in your excel folder. 3. Now in cell A5 type Grades. Then underneath this, type [ Gr. K, 1, 2 ] as it is in the top right corner of the chart above. Now type [ Gr. 11 ] then [Gr. 3,4 ]. Continue typing the different grades down the list as they are listed around this chart. There should be 8 total different grades. 4. In cell B5 type recyclables. We will guess that a total of 1500 recyclable were turned in total. In order for us to know the number of recyclables each class brought in we must multiply 1500 by the percent that class had. So to find the item sold by K, 1, 2 we will type in the cell (B6)[ =1500*.21 ]. I got that percent from the graph above. Then for Gr. 11 use the formula [ =1500*.01 ]. Continue this all the way down the list. 5. When you finish, skip to cell B15 then click on the auto sum button, this is the same function button you have been using but if you just click on it instead of clicking the arrow it will automatically sum the list above that particular cell. So just click on the icon and hit ok, it should automatically guess the proper cells that you want to sum. Make sure this says 1500, otherwise you entered something wrong in the cells above this. 6. Now highlight your data, cells A5:B13. Click on the chart wizard icon. Choose a pie chart, then choose the sub pie chart option that has the 3D effect like the one above. Then hit next. ***(If you mess up on the chart and forget a step, just click on the chart and go to the chart menu and choose chart options, this will allow you to make most of the changes you need) 7. The data range should be what you have already selected, make sure the series is column (since we put each series or grade in the first column, not in a row). Hit next. 8. Give it a title like the one on the chart above. There is no X or Y axis on pie charts. Then choose the Legend tab at the top of this dialogue box and uncheck show legend. Choose the data labels tab, and choose show label and percent like it is above. Hit next. 9. For chart location choose: as object in sheet 1. Hit Finish. 10. Hit file print preview, hit esc. Then make sure the chart fits on the page properly. Save all changes. Sheet 2 11. Switch to sheet two in your excel document. Type your name at the top once again, then type Lesson 8 underneath your name, and under that type Column Graph. You will be duplicating the chart on the next page. 12. To enter your data you will need to put Total Revenues, Total Expenses, and Profit/Loss in column A. Then in the row above this is where you need to put the years, 2003, 2004, and 2005. 13. Read the graph above and use the approximate numbers to make your graph. For instance look at the column for Total Revenues in 2003, it lands just below half way between 80,000 and 90,000, you may approximate this number to be about 83,000. Continue filling in all the numbers on this data chart. Format all this information to look nice. 14. Now it is time to make the chart. You will be using the chart wizard and you need to have the setting listed below. Column graph, not 3D Column Style for the range Title : The Cookie Shop – 2003-2005 Income. No grid lines No data Labels Legend at Right As object in Sheet 2 15. You will want to color it just like the one above. To do this double click on the chart and give it a fill color (by clicking the little colored boxes) of Yellow. Hit OK. Then double click on the space behind the columns (it is not yellow) and make it the same yellow fill color. Give it no outline. Hit OK. Changing the colors of each column is done the same way. Double click on the total revenues column and give it a fill color of lavender, the expenses column a maroon color, and profit/loss a green color. 16. Move the legend up a little and make it bigger, make sure the chart is placed to fit in one page, save all changes and print both sheets. Turn in with a gradesheet. 17. Save all changes
