Idioms: a shotgun wedding (British, American & Australian, old-fashioned, American, old-fashioned) a marriage that is arranged very quickly because the woman is going to have a baby. After a shotgun wedding at 20, she had 3 children before divorcing from her husband. It is called a shot gun wedding because the father of the bride forces the groom to marry his daughter using a gun.
To elope (verb) to runaway and get married. In America the most famous place to elope is Las Vegas, Nevada. To propose (v) To ask someone to marry you. In America the man is supposed to propose to the woman. To pop the question (v) to propose, to ask someone to marry you. I am so happy my boyfriend popped the question last night, and I said yes. Fiancé (noun) the person you are engaged to. I would like you to meet my fiancé. To be married (v.) I am married. (present tense) We will be married next summer. (future tense) I have been married for a year. (present perfect tense.) This means I am still married. I was married for a year. (simple past) I am no longer married.
