CREATING CHARTS WITH MICROSOFT EXCEL A Chart is created from data you have collected and entered into an Excel spreadsheet. Because the chart is linked to the spreadsheet, if you change the data in the spreadsheet the chart will automatically change too. Follow these directions to create a Table and chart/graph. Starting up: 1. Open Microsoft Excel from the Program menu 2. Go to File  Save As. 3. Name the document and save it to your user folder. (Folder with your student ID. DO NOT SAVE IT ON THE DESKTOP) Entering the title: 1. 2. 3. 4. Click in cell A1 and type CT Fuel Consumption Estimates, 1960-2001. Press Enter Click and drag from cell A1 to F1 (highlight). On the Formatting toolbar, click once on the Merge and Center button. Auto Entry: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Click once in cell A3. Type Year and press Enter. In cell A4, type 1960. In cell A5, type 1961. Click and drag on cells A4 and A5 to highlight both cells. Click on the Fill Handle (a dot on the bottom right corner of the highlighted box). When you click on the dot the cursor should look like a +. Now click and drag the + down to 2001 (down to cell A45). This will automatically number your column. Completing the data table: 7. Click on cell B3. 8. Type Coal and press Enter. You will no be in cell B4 9. Type the titles of remaining four energy sources in cell C3, D3, E3 and F3 respectively. 10. Click on cell B4 and type in 101.7 (the amount of coal in 1960) in cell B4 and press Enter. 11. Continue entering in the values for the amount of coal from the page 3 of your Energy Uses Project handout, and press Enter for each entry. 12. For other fuel sources, go to Mrs. Trivedi’s website and open the Energy Uses in CT document. 13. Highlight the column for Natural Gas (do not include heading). 14. Right click on the highlighted column and click copy. 15. Go to your Excel spreadsheet and highlight cell C4 to C45. 16. Right click on the highlighted column & click paste. Data for Natural Gas will appear in column C. 17. Repeat steps 12 – 16 for other three energy sources. You should have 6 columns in your table now. 18. Highlight cell A3 – F45. (Make sure the table is highlighted for steps a) and b)) a) On the Formatting toolbar, click on the drop down arrow next to the Borders icon. b) Select All Borders. You should see all gridlines now. c) On the Formatting toolbar, click on Font Size pull down menu and select 10. 19. On the Formatting toolbar, click on the View. a) Click on Header and Footer. b) Click on Custom Header. c) Type in your Name, date and period # in the Left Section. 20. Click Save. 21. Print the Table and show it to me. Creating Table and Graphs with Excel - Energy Uses in CT Project. Creating a Chart / graph: 1. Click and drag from cell A3 to F45 to highlight the table data including the column headings. 2. On the toolbar, click on the Chart Wizard. 3. In Step 1 of the Cart Wizard select: a) XY (Scatter) b) Scatter with data points connected by smoothed lines. 4. Click Next. 5. On Step 2 of the Chart Wizard, click Next to proceed to Step 3. 6. In Step 3 of the Chart Wizard select: a) Titles tab: i. Change Chart title to CT Fuel Consumptions Estimates, 1960 – 2001. ii. Value (X) axis – type Year. iii. Value (Y) axis – type Fuel (Trillion Btu) b) Axes tab – skip c) Gridlines tab – skip d) Legend tab – √ the box with Show legend. e) Data Labels tab – skip. 7. Click Next. 8. In Step 4 of the Chart Wizard select: As new sheet: 9. Click the Finish button. Finishing Touches: 10. With your Chart/graph now showing, double click on the graph line that is yellow or any other light color. 11. Format Data Series box will open. a) Under Line menu, click on Custom. - Change Color and Weight to a darker color. (make sure you select same color in each pull down menu) b) Under Marker menu, click on Custom. - Change Foreground and Background to the color selected in Color and Weight. 12. Click OK 13. With your Chart/graph still showing Go to View  Header and Footer…. 14. Click on Custom Header button. 15. Type your Name, date and period number in the left section: 16. Click OK 17. Click Save to make sure your Chart is saved in your student folder 18. Print the chart and show it to me. Creating a Chart for Single Energy Source that you select to research: Click and drag from cell A3 to A45 to highlight the year column. While the column A is still highlighted, Press and Hold Control (Ctrl) key. Click on the name of energy source that you want to research. Click and drag from cell 3 to cell 45 of the selected energy column. (Ex. If you want to create a graph for Nuclear energy. Click and drag on cell D3 to D45) 5. You should have two columns highlighted now. One with the year and second with the energy sources you want to research. 6. Repeat Step 2 – Step 14 for Creating the Chart above. 7.
