Project # 8 Excel: “What ABOUT Charts & Graphs?” 4/28/08 Computers – Mr. Albe Name___________________________ Period ______ Date ____ Learning Objectives: • To learn the basics of making charts and graphs in Excel • To understand what kind of data is used to make charts and graphs. • To learn how to data-enter chart information into Excel • To understand that different types of data comparisons are shown by different types of graphs. • To learn how to use the “auto” function in Excel to make charts and graphs. • To learn to analyze the resulting graphs to see that they are accurately and appropriately describing the data. Project Description: 1. Carefully follow the steps outlined on the first TWO pages of Project #8: “Excel: What About Charts and Graphs?”. Be sure to READ and TAKE EACH STEP as outlined in the lab. 2. The first side walks you through creating Line Charts and Line Graphs. 3. The second side walks you through creating “PIE” Charts and Graphs. 4. The third page has you do two activities with Line Charts: 1.1 Create a line chart about Benchmark Tests and Grades, and… 1.2 Create a line chart about Average Temperatures during the year. 5. The fourth page has you do two activities with PIE charts: 2.1 Create a PIE chart of the ingredients in a Cherry Pie, and… 2.2 Create a PIE chart of the calories in the “foods you ate on a Wednesday”. 6. When you have created the Charts and Graphs, save them in your network folder, and either send them as email attachments to the teacher, or print them out and turn them in to the teacher. Sample Charts for: Project 8.0, "What About Charts and Graphs?" -- Using Microsoft INSTRUCTIONS Line Charts and Line Graphs 1. Charts and graphs are normally used to compare two things. For example: age versus weight; benchmark number versus grades earned; month versus temperature. These are best shown by what are called "Line Charts". Step 3 is: click on the space around the graph. A selection bar will come up. Choose "Chart Types". Try various chart types to see which one makes the data easily understandable to a reader. Same data, as a "Column Chart" Example #1.1 : Junior's dad weighed him each year to track his growth. Here is how much Junior weighed from age 1 to age 15: 15 lbs; 20 lbs; 25 lbs; 35 lbs; 37 lbs; 40 lbs; 55 lbs; 70 lbs; 90 lbs; 110 lbs; 115 lbs; 120 lbs; 135 lbs; 150 lbs; 155 lbs. Plot these weight changes on a LINE GRAPH. Try "Chart type: Line" first. Then, follow the rest of the instructons. These are best shown by "PIE" charts. Other Types of Graphs for the same data are kind of hard to understand: This is a "Line Graph" Example 2.1 : Junior saved up his allowance from September to December. In the week before Christmas, here is how he spent his money Christmas shopping: New jacket for self, $55 ; snacks, $13 ; wrapping paper $3.50 ; fishing tackle for Dad. $22.75 ; Silver necklace for Mom, $24 ; Barbie Doll for little Janie, $55, Doggie warm-up jacket with four fuzzy booties -for Ruff $79. Make a Pie Chart showing how much Junior spent on each item. Step 1: Make two lists. Usually you list the "items" in the first cloumn, and then the "money" or numbers in the 2nd column. Step 3: Click on the "Chart Wizard". Choose "Type of Chart - Pie". Then follow the instructions. If you don't understand something, click past it. Complete the box that asks for the TITLE of the chart. It would look something like this: Benchmark 1 2 ETC Grade 90 85 ETC 1.2 Make a chart and a line graph using Excel, showing the 12 months in a year, and the average temperature each month. It would look something like this: Month Jan Feb March ETC Avg. Temp 25 45 50 ETC 2.0 Side #2: Circle "PIE" Charts and "PIE" Graphs 2.1 Make a chart and a "pie" graph showing the weights of the ingredients in a cherry pie. It would start something like this: Ingredient Sugar cherries Baking Powde Baking Soda Pie Crust Mix Karo Syrup Flour Cinnamon Weight in Ounces 16 24 etc 2.2 Make up a chart and a "pie" graph showing the foods you ate, and the number of calories you consumed in a "normal" day. Make up a list of the foods, and the calories.
