Who Are The Queen CiTy roller GirlS?
• The Queen City Roller Girls, founded in spring of 2006, started as a grassroots organization by a handful of women
who love the feel of eight wheels under their feet. The organization drew the interest of over sixty women
from across Western New York to form the three teams for the 2007 inaugural season. Currently in their fourth
season, the Queen City Roller Girls are Western New York’s only skater owned and operated all-women flat-track
roller derby league.
• The league consists of five teams: the Devil Dollies, Nickel City Knockouts, Suicidal Saucies, Alley Cats and the QCRG
Travel Team. In addition, a squad of referees, coaches and production personnel form the support staff for the league.
• The league season is comprised of eight intraleague bouts, and a number of travel team home and away bouts, includ-
ing the Queen City Cup championships. Bouts this past season have sold out, with an average of 1,200 attendees.
QCRG has hosted and been hosted by leagues from Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Hamilton, Northeast
Ohio, Rochester and Ithaca
• This year, the Queen City Roller Girls will
become members of the Women’s Flat
Track Derby Association (WFTDA),
bringing them to the national level of
flat track roller derby competition.

• Completed our third season in 2009, and have since doubled the skating roster
as well as sustained near sell-out attendance at the bouts.
• Featured in the Buffalo News, WGRZ, WKBW, ArtVoice, Time Warner
SportsNet, the Niagara Gazette, Metro Source and Generation Magazine.
• Voted “Best Amateur Sports Team”, and “Best Amateur Athlete” (Mia Mauler,
former captain of the Nickel City Knockouts) by ArtVoice readers in 2007.
• The QCRG.net website has grown to over 10,000 visits a month, and over
3,500 friends on the league and team MySpace pages.

WhAT iS roller derby?
Roller derby is an American-invented contact sport based on formation roller skating around an oval track. While tradition-
ally a professional (paid) sport for both women and men, roller derby has in its current incarnation developed a predomi-
nantly female, amateur circuit with a strong DIY ethic.
History
The term roller derby dates at least as far back as 1922, when the Chicago Tribune
used it to describe multi-day, flat-track roller skating races, similar to 24-hour banked-
track championship races reported on by The New York Times in 1914. In the 1930s,
the sport was reinvented by emphasizing the physical contact – and thus the more
spectacular aspects of the sport. Roller Derby took root as an icon of popular cul-
ture as matches were held in numerous cities throughout the U.S., bouts which were
broadcast on radio and, eventually, on television.
The sport/spectacle endured several boom-and-bust cycles throughout the second
half of the 20th century. The initial business model of roller derby finally collapsed in
the mid-1970s, but the sport underwent several professional, on-and-off TV revivals
which were spearheaded by veteran skaters, including an revitalized organization named Roller Games, a 10-year Inter-
national Roller Skating League (IRSL), and the TV spectacles RollerGames and RollerJam.
Contemporary Roller Derby
In California in the early 2000s, a small number of for-profit organizations, consisting largely of veterans from earlier reviv-
als, continued to organize one-off matches using paid skaters. Meanwhile, an international grassroots revival organized
by women unaffiliated with previous incarnations of the sport restored a focus on athleticism.
Nearly all contemporary roller derby leagues are all-female and self-organized, and
furthermore were formed in an indie, DIY spirit by relatively new roller derby enthusi-
asts. These leagues deploy traditional quad roller skates, and a punk aesthetic and/or
ethic is often prominent. Many if not most are legally incorporated organizations, and
most compete on flat tracks.
Each league typically features two or more local teams which compete in public match-
es, called bouts, for a diverse fanbase. Members of fledgling leagues often practice
and strategize together, regardless of team affiliation, between bouts. Moreover, as the
business and infrastructure of the sport matures, successful local leagues form travel
teams to compete with the roller derby leagues of other cities and states.

2010 QCRG Sponsorship

Why SponSor?
• QCRG is grass roots, all-volunteer, and female & WNY positive. By sponsoring the Queen City Roller Girls, you
support the women who do it for themselves. The
skaters pay monthly dues, which can be a financial
hardship on some, yet these dues as well as event
revenue do not cover the expenses the league incurs
running the organization.
• Sponsorship aligns your organization or product with
a fast-growing, highly visible, and entertaining sport
that fans feel very passionate about. Promotion is
the major gain your organization will receive, in addi-
tion to patronage of the derby girls, along with their
families, friends, colleagues and social networks.
• Now in our fourth season, attendance has tripled
and all bouts have been sell-outs. With season
tickets now available and an increased fan-base,
2010 will be an amazing year for attendance.
• QCRG has 10,000 total average monthly visits to the QCRG.net website, over 3,500 friends on the league and
team MySpace pages and an e-letter reaching over 2,000 fans (as of February 2009).
• Fans that attend our bouts range from sports fanatics to those who don’t consider themselves sports fans at all.
Imagine reaching punk rockers, socer moms and hard-core sports fans all at the same time.
• Tickets are very affordable compared to the average cost of NBA, NFL and MLB tickets.
• Cost of sponsorship is very reasonable compared to sponsorship of other entertainment or sporting events of a
similar size.
• We support the community by partnering with non-profit groups and participating in community build-
ing activities. A portion of event proceeds go directly to these organizations.
• Past partners include the American
Cancer Society, Crisis Services, Girls
Inc., Hope Chest, ReTREE WNY, Aids
Community Services and the Food
Bank of WNY.
• Past and current sponsors include
Healthcare Intervention Specialists,
FWS Furniture, Allentown Athletix,
Minuteman Press, Great Skate, and
VertaSource, LLC, to name a few.
