Explore our hidden treasures

Residents and visitors will be able to explore the architectural and cultural heritage of Guildford Borough for free during a weekend of events for Heritage Open Days.
Promoted nationally by the Civic Trust, the National Heritage Open Day scheme will be take place on 9 and 10 September. Guildford has amongst the highest number of Open Day events, thanks to the work of the Council, Guildford Tour Guides and the Guildford Society. This much anticipated celebration of historic buildings will be launched by the Mayor of Guildford, Cllr Angela Gunning at The Toll House, next to Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, to mark the installation of the new hydro electric turbine within this previously disused building. Local restoration company Artington Manor Restoration are sponsoring the event for the third year running. Some venues will require tickets due to space restrictions. Brilliant books for all
The Festival favourites, ‘Girls’ Night’ and ‘Crime Night’ will be taking place again this year. There will be poetry, history, biography, comedy, workshops, travel and lots of events for children. The winner of the Goss First Novel Award will be announced by Sarah Dunant, Chair of the Judging Panel, at a Presentation Dinner. BBC Southern Counties Radio will be featuring the short-listed stories for the Guildford Book Festival Short Story Competition, the judges being authors Elizabeth Buchan and Jane Wenham-Jones.
